Hopeless Wanderer - Mumford and Sons

The Experience:

You want to love. To commit. But you know you'll only fail. How can you share someone's road if you know you're a hopeless wanderer?

Music Video:
Starring as Mumford & Sons are 4 American actor/comedians: Jason Sudeikis, Will Forte, Jason Bateman and Ed Helms. They poke fun at the real band, imitating their look only to take the music video places Mumf has never gone before: on-their-knees guitar solos, punk style end-of-the-song instrument trashing, and an uncharacteristic gay kiss - definitely a bucket of cold water for fans offering Bible-inspired interpretations of the lyrics.

My Take:
The music video has little or nothing to do with the meaning of the lyrics - the whole point was to make fun of themselves, so I'll let you decide if the gay making out was just a less than tasteful joke, or real Mumf. Hopeless Wanderer itself is about a deeply human experience: weakness. Ever day we run up against our limits: "I couldn't... didn't... should have". We let ourselves and others down. How can we keep our hope afire if both of us are hopeless wanderers? By holding fast to each other and lending each other strength whenever one of you starts to lag.

Ask Yourself:
Are you ready to love someone forever? How are you planning on dealing with your own limits and weakness?

LYRICS:

You heard my voice
I came out of the woods by choice
The shelter also gave the shade
But in the dark I have no name

So leave that click in my head
And I will remember the words that you said
Left a clouded mind and a heavy heart
But I was sure we could see a new start

So when your hope's on fire
But you know your desire
Don't hold a glass over the flame
Don't let your heart grow cold
I will call you by name
I will share your road

But hold me fast hold me fast
Cos I'm a hopeless wanderer
Hold me fast hold me fast
Cos I'm a hopeless wanderer

I wrestled long with my youth
We tried so hard to live in the truth
But do not tell me all is fine
When I lose my head I lose my spine

So leave that click in my head
And I will remember the words that you said
You brought me out from the cold
Now how I long how I long to grow old

So when your hope's on fire
But you know your desire
Don't hold a glass over the flame
Don't let your heart grow cold
I will call you by name
I will share your road

But hold me fast hold me fast
Cos I'm a hopeless wanderer
Hold me fast hold me fast
Cos I'm a hopeless wanderer

And I will learn I will learn
To love the skies I'm under
