We Own The Night - The Wanted

The Experience:

You want to be happy. You want people to remember that you were happy. But what is happiness?

Music Video:
Young and not so young - including The Wanted - prepping for the party, having a great time, and then heading home at the end of the night (several hours after dawn). On the surface, it seems like a typical night at the pub... but the lyrics, and the elderly couple that party along, take a deeper turn. This song isn't just about teenager good times: it's for everyone.

My Take:
The music video is confused. It goes back and forth tonight - the party - and tomorrow - meaning and lasting happiness. But that's not bad. It's actually very real. Because we're all trying to figure out happiness. We Own the Night starts with the "typical" ingredients: a little drunk, a little sing and dance till we lose our minds, a little sex - wake up in studded stranger's bed. But underneath that standardized (and maybe stale?) attempt at happiness, there's tension. The Wanted aren't satisfied. They leave the party before anyone gets to the stranger's bed part. The party is fine, but they want something deeper: meaning. They want to be remembered, not just as the people at the party, but as the people who made the party real. Heroes, whose happiness never died.

Ask Yourself:
Are you content with just whatever? Where does your meaning and happiness come from? What will you be remembered for?

LYRICS:

May our hearts be full like our drinks tonight
May we sing and dance till we lose our minds
We are only young if we seize the night
Tonight we own the night
Tonight we own the night

La la la la la
La la la la la

When my time is over, lying in my grave
Written on my tombstone, I want it to say
This man was a legend, a legend of his time
When he was at a party, the party never died

Hey, Everybody's got a dream so what do you say
Are we making history?

May our hearts be full like our drinks tonight
May we sing and dance till we lose our minds
We are only young if we seize the night
Tonight we own the night
Tonight we own the night

La la la la la
La la la la la

For tonight I'm famous, for tonight I'm king
And I will be remembered, for centuries of sand
This man was a hero, a hero of the night
When he was at a party, the party never died

Hey, I'm a little drunk, but I got something to say

May our hearts be full like our drinks tonight
May we sing and dance till we lose our minds
We are only young if we seize the night
Tonight we own the night
Tonight we own the night

And let us wake up in studded stranger's bed
Let the drinks comes in until nothing left
And this night my friends we will not forget
Tonight we own the night
Tonight we own the night

May our hearts be full like our drinks tonight
May we sing and dance till we lose our minds
We are only young if we seize the night
Tonight we own the night
Tonight we own the night
