Elastic Heart - Sia feat. The Weeknd & Diplo

The Experience: You've hurt me, it burns. Yet you did not break me - I've got  thick skin and an elastic heart. I will spring back - but the pain of losing a chosen one is still there. I'm still fighting for peace. I may have survived, but why can I not conquer love?

The 2nd Official Performance Video: Sia eliminates claims that her first video (below) was pedophilia, by re-doing the video with different dancers. Now it's two women, both much more clearly the older Sia and Maddie continuing to act as the wild inner child of Sia. The meaning of both videos is the same: inner conflict, and eventually a very suffered inner acceptance.

The 1st Official Video: Shia and Maddie (made famous by the Chandelier video) play lion-tamer and lion - with deeper roles. Both circle each other viciously. Shia charges, Maddie roars, Shia retreats, but manages to hurl chains around Maddie's neck. She resists, then collapses. Shia drags on the invisible chains, slowly. She collapses, which makes him believe she's unconscious. When the chain's slack, Maddie attacks Shia, who now runs for cover. She pirouette-kicks him, chasing and leaping on top of him.
When Shia tries to climb out of the cage, Maddie undoes the chains around her neck. With no enemy in sight, she falls asleep. Shia drops from the cage top, and examines the sleeping child, wondering how to tame her. Deciding to try gentleness this time, Shia wakes her and offers his hand. Maddie sniffs the scent of his blood-soaked hands. She seems to accept him and allows his embrace, then suddenly bites his hand and turns wild again. Shia screams, waves his damaged hand, then attacks her.
Maddie runs out between the cage bars, and mocks him with a fake smile, then sucking her thumb, as if she was helpless. Shia loses himself to rage, and finally collapses. Maddie returns through the bars, climbs on top of Shia and tames him. She knocks three times on his head, each time changing his expression. Finally, Maddie tries to drag a now-docile or stupefied Shia out of the cage. He just doesn't fit, and she doesn't understand why he's stuck.

The Meaning of the Elastic Heart Video is, in Sia's own words, "these two warring 'Sia' self states." The video plays with Shia, representing adulthood and reason, and Maddie, as wild and at times vicious as a child or animal. Maddie plays the subconscious, our imagination, capable of attacking without cause, but also falling asleep in innocence. Shia seems wiser, but he can't control Maddie... and neither can he leave the cage of his own limits. The video makes us question who we like or hate more: reasoning or wild subconscious. And at the end, our dreams are trying to tug us free, but reason just can't get out.

My Take:
The meaning of Elastic Heart goes both ways. First, Sia claims you did not break me. On the other hand, she says I trust no one, I may snap, I can't survive. She's fought, she's beaten her ex (another one bites the dust), but she still asks herself, why can I not conquer love. How will she find love again if she makes herself impenetrable? Love means an open heart, not a thick skin and an elastic heart. Like Katniss Everdeen in the movie, fighting for peace doesn't bring peace. Love is being open, not being elastic. Peace isn't beating the other person, it's finding someone to share your heart with.

Ask Yourself:
Do I trust no one? Is my rubber-band elastic heart closed to everyone else? Do I dare let love back in?

LYRICS:

And another one bites the dust
But why can I not conquer love?
And I might’ve got to be with one
I learned to fight this war without weapons
And I want it and I want it, it burns
But there was so many red flags
Now another one bites the dust
And let’s be clear, I trust no one

You did not break me
I’m still fighting for peace

Well I’ve got a thick skin and an elastic heart
But your blade it might be too sharp
I’m like a rubber band, until you pull too hard
But I may snap and I move close

But you won’t see me move no more
‘Cause I’ve got an elastic heart

I’ve got an elastic heart
Yeah, I’ve got an elastic heart

And now I stay up through the night
Let’s be clear, won’t close my eyes
And I know that I can’t survive
I walked too far to save my life
And I want it, I want my life so bad
I’m doing everything I can
Then another one bites the dust
It’s hard to lose a chosen one

You did not break me
I’m still fighting for peace

Well I’ve got a thick skin and an elastic heart
But your blade it might be too sharp
I’m like a rubber band, until you pull too hard
But I may snap and I move close

But you won’t see me move no more
‘Cause I’ve got an elastic heart

Well I’ve got a thick skin and an elastic heart
But your blade it might be too sharp
I’m like a rubber band, until you pull too hard
But I may snap and I move close

But you won’t see me move no more
‘Cause I’ve got an elastic heart
You won’t see me move no more
‘Cause I’ve got an elastic heart

I’ve got an elastic heart
