Free - Rudimental ft. Emeli Sandé

The Experience: Nowhere to go. No one seems to want you. So you give up on friends, and go it alone...

The Video: Free-flyer Jokke Sommer plays a daring loner remembering how he was bullied as a kid, only to find meaning and freedom in flight from everything.

My Take: UK group Rudimental has a great grip on the problem of loneliness. The lyrics and music video brood over being bullied and being a loner with no friends anywhere, not even in heaven. But Free doesn't seem to offer much in the way of an answer. The loner doesn't seem to be making much of an effort to belong - he just sleeps through Sunday, so it's not like he's trying that hard to connect with heaven. And he cares more about freedom than about actually finding a home. The question is, what use is freedom if it only takes you farther away from everyone else?

Ask Yourself: Are you one of the reasons that the loners don't feel welcome? What do you do to reach out to others?

LYRICS:

I don’t do yoga, never tried Pilates
Not many people want me at their parties
Tryna find my place, some place, oh I, oh I, oh I
I drink a little more than recommended
This world ain’t exactly what my heart expected
Tryna find my way someway, oh I, oh I, oh I

See, whoa, c’est la vie
Maybe something’s wrong with me
But, whoa, at least I am free, I am free
Yeah, whoa, c’est la vie
Maybe something’s wrong with me
But, hey, at least I am free, I am free

If you ask the church then I am no believer
Spend Sundays asleep I'm just another dreamer
Still tryna find my home sweet home, oh I, oh I, oh I
I guess I ain’t too good for money neither
I got two left feet, no, I'm no Jackson either
Just tryna find my way someway, oh I, oh I, oh I

[Chorus:]
See, whoa, c’est la vie
Maybe something’s wrong with me
But, whoa, at least I am free, oh, oh, I am free
Yeah, whoa, c’est la vie
Maybe something’s wrong with me
But, whoa, at least I am free, oh, oh, I am free

Just tryna find my home sweet home, sweet home, sweet home, sweet home,
I drink a little more than recommended
This ain’t exactly what my heart expected

Whoa, c’est la vie
Maybe something’s wrong with me
But whoa, at least I am free, oh, oh, I am free
Yeah, whoa, c’est la vie
Maybe something’s wrong with me
But, whoa, at least I am free, oh, oh, I am free.

Whoa, c’est la vie
Maybe something’s wrong with me
Whoa, at least I am free, oh, oh, I am free
Whoa, c’est la vie
Maybe something’s wrong with me
Whoa, at least I am free, oh, oh, I am free.
