Pompeii - Bastille

The Experience: Where do we begin? Bastille's caught up and lost in all of our vices. In that confusion and darkness, Bastille asks us how am I gonna be an optimist about this?
Music Video: Bastille watches his city, wondering why it's so quiet. When he goes to a store, he finds out. Eyes, "the windows of our souls", have gone black. Soulless zombies wait for Bastille everywhere he goes. No matter how hard he runs, he can't escape.

The Meaning of Pompeii uses the destroyed city's name to remind us of ruins where walls kept tumbling down. Building from the idea of a broken city, Bastille tells the story of our fall: left to my own devices, I became caught up and lost in all of our vices. Not just that. It isn't the first time the city that we love has destroyed itself. (If you close your eyes, does it almost feel like you've been here before?) Bastille asks us where do we begin? The rubble (meaning rebuilding the outer walls) or our sins (meaning rebuilding our inner walls)? Until we find a way to strengthen our souls, avoid becoming zombies (video), there's no way to be an optimist about this.

Ask Yourself: Where do we begin, the rubble or our sins? Why are we fixing rubble if we still haven't found a way to fix our sins?

LYRICS:
I was left to my own devices
Many days fell away with nothing to show

And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Great clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above

But if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
You've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?

We were caught up and lost in all of our vices
In your pose as the dust settles around us

And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Great clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above

But if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
You've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this? [2x]

Oh where do we begin?
The rubble or our sins?
Oh where do we begin?
The rubble or our sins?

And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Great clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above

But if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
You've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this? [2x]
But if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all?
