Burning Gold - Christina Perri

The Experience: Looking for an exit in this world of fear, looking for my ticket to a higher place... How do I make my life mean something?

Music Video: The lyric video tracks Burning Gold's story through the rain of her past, and into the gold of the future. What changes isn't the scenery, or even the fact that it's raining. Just the colors: from dark and dreary to golden, backing up Christina Perri's message of hope. You can change how you live your life, even if you can't change your situation. The music video hits the same message of hope from a different angle: Christina Perri is a luckless waitress in a hick town diner, until a famous singer walks through and picks her up as a back-up singer. She shines, marries her singer, eclipses even him... and then it all falls apart when she finds him cheating on her. The video is still positive - the color scheme goes from black to gold - but the message isn't just hope. Perri is telling us that what defines your life isn't what happens to you. Instead, it's what you do that makes the difference.

The Meaning of Burning Gold: The cover art for Burning Gold features Christina Perri with a Midas touch, turning her right hand, arm and shoulder into gold. That gold - giving your life meaning - is what Burning Gold is all about. Change starts with the daily grind: I wish the wind would carry a change. It only ends once you've burnt all the useless packaging of your life down to gold. That's legit. But one question for Christina Perri: what is the flame? What makes your life worthwhile? If you don't know, you risk burning your life to the ground without any gold to show for it. You can act to change your life - but you need to know where you're headed before you can go there.

Ask Yourself: When you've burnt away everything that's worthless, what's left of your life?

LYRICS:

Looking for an exit in this world of fear
I can see the path that leads away,
Momma never left and Daddy needs me here,
I wish the wind would carry a change.

I'm setting fire to where I gotta go,
Let's start a fire everywhere that we go,
We started fires,
We started fires 'til our lives were burning gold,
'Til our lives were burning gold.

I've had enough,
I'm standing up,
I need, I need a change.
I've had enough,
I'm chasing life,
I need, I need a change.

I'm setting fire to where I gotta go,
Let's start a fire everywhere that we go,
We started fires,
We started fires 'til our lives were burning gold,
'Til our lives were burning gold.

Looking for my ticket to a higher place
I can see my chance begin to fade,
One step forward into back again,
I wish the wind would carry a change.

I've had enough,
I'm standing up,
I need, I need to change.
I've had enough,
I'm chasing life,
I need, I need to change.

I'm setting fire to where I gotta go,
Let's start a fire everywhere that we go,
We started fires,
We started fires 'til our lives were burning gold,
'Til our lives were burning gold.

Looking back I see, I had flame in me,
I'm the wind that's carrying the change.

I've had enough,
I'm chasing life,
I need, I need to change.

I'm setting fire to where I gotta go,
Let's start a fire everywhere that we go,
We started fires,
We started fires 'til our lives were burning gold,
'Til our lives were burning gold.

I'm setting fire to where I gotta go,
Let's start a fire everywhere that we go,
We started fires,
We started fires 'til our lives were burning gold,
'Til our lives were burning gold.
