Stay With Me - Sam Smith

The Experience: Sam Smith's sweet voice carries the conflict between feeling "you're all I need" but knowing "this ain't love." He started off wanting just "a one night stand," but he knows he needs more - "deep down, I know this never works."

Music Video: Sam leaves an empty (meaningless?) bed and wanders. You never find who he's with or who he wants to stay with me. The only others he finds is in a church, but they don't help out much. They sing and look as lonely as Sam.

The meaning of Sam Smith's single Stay With Me is a morning-after story: where's the love? He takes a girl to bed, knowing "this ain't love" - it's just sex. Things go wrong in the line "these nights never seem to go to plan." He asks himself why the just physical-sexual won't stop there in the line, "Why am I so emotional?"  He answers, "Guess I'm not good at a one-night stand." Sex isn't enough, he concludes, "I still need love, 'cause I'm just a man." Every man ultimately needs love more than sex. Who will give him love when he only knows sex? Who will teach Sam to give love first, so that someone will truly stay with him?

Ask Yourself: Which comes first, sex or love? If you give sex first, will you ever really find love?

LYRICS:
Guess it's true
I'm not good at a one night stand
But I still need love
'Cause I'm just a man

These nights never seem to
Go to plan
I don't want you to leave
Will you hold my hand?

Oh, won't you stay with me?
'Cause you're all I need
This ain't love, it's clear to see
But darling, stay with me

Why am I so emotional?
No, it's not a good look
Need some self-control
And deep down, I know this never works
But you can lay with me so it doesn't hurt

Oh, won't you stay with me?
'Cause you're all I need
This ain't love, it's clear to see
But darling, stay with me

Oh, won't you stay with me?
'Cause you're all I need
This ain't love, it's clear to see
But darling, stay with me

Oh, won't you stay with me?
'Cause you're all I need
This ain't love, it's clear to see
