We Might Be Dead By Tomorrow - Soko

The Experience: With life seeming so uncertain, Soko brings in a great guitar chord to ask "Give me all your love." The violin comes in to emphasize the struggle between "All I hear is I'm not ready now" and the shortness of life. ("Soon enough we'll die.")

Music Video: "We Might Be Dead By Tomorrow" didn't hit Billboard's Top Ten thanks to its own official music video (which flashes black-and-white scenes of tombstones and flashes of Soko in lesbian foreplay, including brief exposed nudity). It went viral off "First Kiss" (above) where 20 random strangers are asked to kiss each other. Each kiss is passionate... but the bizarre (but real) end of "First Kiss" is that when they let go there's a gap. They're still in front of a stranger. A kiss like that was meant to express love... commitment... Not just a stranger. Something's missing.

The meaning of Soko's single We Might Be Dead By Tomorrow is dark. With its lyrics, it could have been like Keysha's Die Young: party and forget tomorrow. But Soko's haunting voice and guitar don't forget it. There's a sense of frustration or futility behind the lyrics, behind the notes. "I can't go on wasting my time." Soko's answer is "Let's love fully, let's love loud, let's love now." Which is true... in part. What is the meaning of life? What is the meaning of love? Simply passionately kissing (in the "First Kiss" video) will block your mind to the real questions - for a while. But you still won't have the answer to how to live/love if "we might be dead by tomorrow."

Ask Yourself: If "Soon enough we'll die", how do you live/love fully?

Give me all your love
'Cause for all we know
We might be dead by tomorrow

I can't go on wasting my time
Adding scars to my heart
'Cause all I hear is
I'm not ready now

And I can tell
That you didn't have
To face your mother
Losing her lover
Without saying goodbye
'Cause she didn't have time

I don't want to judge
What's in your heart
But if you're not ready for love
How can you be ready for life?
How can you be ready for life?

So let's love fully
Let's love loud
Let's love now
'Cause soon enough we'll die
'Cause soon enough we'll die
'Cause soon enough we'll die
'Cause soon enough we'll die
'Cause soon enough we'll die
'Cause soon enough we'll die
