West Coast - Lana Del Rey

The Experience: West Coast is about empty love: the kind where you spend time with each other, but never open up, never actually love. The kind that ends up being a cheap drug...

Music Video: The music video cycles back and forth between Lana on the beach with her boyfriend, and Lana as an escort, in the back seat of a plush limo with an older man. She doesn't look either of them in the eyes, and the music is the same whether she's with her lover boy blue, or in the limo. Lana del Rey also lays it on thick with the sickly repetitive tones and beat, that climax with an electronic whine to shots of Lana on fire. Is "love" this dreary?

The Meaning of West Coast: The song equates love with music - but you've got the music, you've got the music in you, don't you... And the music is dreary in West Coast. Lana dumps the boy she actually loves, and goes lush, hoping to find something more - I get this feeling like it all could happen. That's why I'm leaving you for the moment... She doesn't find it. When you turn love into a drug and go searching for thrills, all you do is make desire weaker and seedier, until you put it out altogether, but stay addicted to the empty husk that you now call love. Love as a drug. Something that you're hooked on, never delivering but always reeling you back in.

Ask Yourself: Is Lana Del Rey saying that this is all there is to love? Maybe this is what she experiences - jaded melancholy is definitely her thing. Or is she urging us to overcome our addictions to the fake stuff, and start looking for true love?

LYRICS:

Down on the West Coast, they got a saying
If you're not drinking, then you're not playing
But you've got the music, you've got the music in you, don't you?
Down on the West Coast, I get this feeling like it all could happen
That's why I'm leaving you for the moment, you for the moment
Boy blue, yeah you

It's getting harder to show it
I'm feeling hot to the touch
You say you miss me
And I always say I miss you so much
But something keeps me really quiet
I’m alive, I’m a lush
Your love, your love, your love

I can see my baby swinging
His parliament is on fire when his hands are up
On the balcony and I'm singing
Ooh baby, ooh baby, I'm in love
I can see my sweet boy swinging
He's crazy and Cubano como yo my love
On the balcony and I'm singing
Move baby, move baby, I’m in love
I’m in love
I’m in love

Down on the west coast, they got their icons
Their silver starlets, their queens of Saigon
And you got the music, you got the music in you, don't you?
Down on the west coast, they love their movies
Their golden cars and rock-n-roll groupies
And you got the music, you got the music in you, don't you?
You push it hard I pull away
I’m feeling hotter than fire
I guess that no one ever really made me feel that I’m a child
Didn’t say you gotta know, boy it's you I desire
Your love, your love, your love

I can see my baby swinging
His parliament is on fire when his hands are up
On the balcony and I'm singing
Move baby, move baby, I’m in love

I can see my sweet boy swinging
He's crazy and Cubano como yo my love
On the balcony and I'm singing
Move baby, move baby, I’m in love

I can see my baby swinging
His parliament is on fire when his hands are up
On the balcony and I'm singing
Ooh baby, ooh baby, I'm in love
He's crazy and Cubano como yo my love
On the balcony and I'm singing
Move baby, move baby, I’m in love
I’m in love
I’m in love
