Shades Of Cool - Lana Del Rey

by Simon Cleary

The Experience: Lana's Shades Of Cool sings about the unfixable side of her baby, and her desperation at trying to get inside his cool heart. Shades Of Cool combines Lana's sweet vocals in an alternative rock in a style that reminds us of James Bond beats in the 70s.

Official Video: The video starts and ends with the older man who seems sophisticated and cool. Lana was already after him. She manages to 'pick him up' by being a wet stripper. When he finally comes to her, she collapses in happiness. Her colors are white (when she's looking for him), blue (when she attracts him by being equally sophisticated), and red (when she finally gets him passionate about her). But it ends in shades of blue again.

The video takes on new meaning when in the unity of the Ultraviolence Album (lyrics and videos). She's trying to get with the same elderly actor as in West Coast's video, continuing with non-linear takes and timeline. She wants him despite "They say I'm too young to love you." (line in Brooklyn Baby). And all the while bullets and bombs fade in and out - reminding us of Ultraviolence's theme, unequal and 'rough' love.
Lana continues her dark streak. And it looks like it will keep up in the rest of the Ultraviolence album videos.

The meaning of Lana Del Rey's Shades Of Cool is mistaking the wrong emotions for love. Lana loves my baby... or thinks she does.
Part of what she thinks is love is rivalry. "He calls for me, and not for you." She doesn't feel real love, but at least other girls are further down the chain.
The other feeling she thinks is love is trying to "fix him." Girlfriends sometimes mistake the motherly feeling of wanting to "make him better" with real love. True love's leaning on each other equally, wrong love is trying to make him need you. Men resist being mothered again. Lana's baby resists by finding love elsewhere "he loves his drugs." That leaves a frustrated Lana realizing "I can't help him, can't make him better."
The troubled lyrics of Shades Of Cool are about loving the wrong way.

Ask Yourself: Do I love someone the wrong way?

LYRICS:
My baby lives in shades of blue
Blue eyes and jazz and attitude
He lives in California too
He drives a Chevy Malibu
And when he calls, he calls for me, and not for you
He lives for love, he loves his drugs, he loves his baby too

But I can't fix him, can't make him better
And I can't do nothing about this strange weather

But you are unfixable
I can't break through your world
'Cause you live in shades of cool
Your heart is unbreakable

My baby lives in shades of cool
Cool heart and hands and aptitude
He lives for love, for women too
I'm one of many, one is blue
And when he calls, he calls for me, and not for you
He prays for love, he prays for peace, and maybe someone new

But I can't help him, can't make him better
And I can't do nothing about his strange weather

Cause you are unfixable
I can't break through your world
Cause you live in shades of cool
Your heart is unbreakable

But you are unfixable
I can't break through your world
‘Cause you live in shades of cool
Your heart is unbreakable
