Sirens - Cher Lloyd

by Simon Cleary

The Experience: Cher Lloyd brings us a dance-ballad about stumbling on with her burden of love - "I carry the weight of you." She calls for a rest from it all, to "lay down here." Beautiful song about the exhaustions of life and love.

Lyric Video: Cher plays a wife, watching her husband with his drug-dealing partners, her eyes telling him to stop. He ignores her. She wanders off just as the DEA drug-busts and captures him. Evading them, she burns the evidence and then hides in the house. Her 5-year old daughter wakes up and comes into her arms.
Cher's father was arrested when she was 5 years old. She built a video from that pain.

The meaning of Cher Lloyd's Sirens is about when and how to give up. The scene is taken from the Odyssey's Sirens - mermaids with a lovely song that made you swim out to them... but you drowned under the effort of trying to find what you love.
First stanza's "I struggle on" despite the wind, numbness soon meets "I'm growing older, getting weaker everyday." The rest of the song speaks of the burden of loving: "I carry the weight of you" and "you hold me so tightly, it’s hard to breathe." Cher reveals the context with the line "I am drowning, and you’re stealing every breath." Two lovers, drowning at sea. His clinging onto her is drowning her. Cher begs to "Lay down" (give up) either in shallow water where she can breathe or in water hallowed (made holy by her dying sacrifice). Cher ends following "the sirens' calling" - dying trying to love.
No one can "carry the weight of you." Love isn't just my strength taking care of you. It's also letting you take care of me.

Ask Yourself: How do I carry my burdens?

LYRICS:
I carry the weight of you in my heavy heart
And the wind is so icy, I am numb
I carry the weight of you heading back to start
With the thousand eyes on me, I stumble on

I am tired, I'm growing older
I'm getting weaker everyday, yeah
I carry the weight of you
I carry the weight of you

Lay down here beside me in the shallow water
Beside me where the sun is shining on us still
Lay down here beside me in the hallowed water
Beside me with the silver lining stays until
The sirens’ calling

We follow the sun down low 'til we hit the night
And you hold me so tightly, it’s hard to breathe, oh

And I’m tired, I'm growing older
I’m getting weaker everyday, yeah
We follow the sun down low
We follow the sun down low

Lay down here beside me in the shallow water
Beside me where the sun is shining on us still
Lay down here beside me in the hallowed water
Beside me with the silver lining stays until
The sirens’ calling
The sirens’ calling

Yeah, I’m tired, I’m growing older
I’m getting weaker everyday
I am drowning, and you’re stealing every breath
Take me away and just

Lay down here beside me in the shallow water
Beside me where the sun is shining on us still
Lay down here beside me in the hallowed water
Beside me with the silver lining stays until
The sirens’ calling
The sirens’ calling
