Chandelier - Sia (line-by-line analysis)

We've been asked to explain ALL the lyrics in Sia's hit Chandelier. So here goes!
The title describes the party girl who's swinging from the chandelier... She's drunk too much, showing off what's under her skirt, and laughing. But is she happy? Sia's lyrics go deeper. Read more

SIA'S LYRICS (italics)                                                          MUSICINSIDEU'S COMMENTARY
"Party girls don't get hurt"
The 'party girl' pretends there's no pain in her life
She defends herself with the slogan "Party girls don't get hurt"

Can't feel anything, when will I learn?
I push it down, push it down

By pretending, she pushes the pain down, away from herself.
By pushing her feelings down, she can't feel any feeling at all.
She feels empty, and asks "When will I learn?"

I'm the one "for a good time call"

Phone's blowin' up, they're ringin' my doorbell
When there's a party, she's popular.
But it's because guys want a chick
they can easily get drunk and easily get into bed with.
I feel the love, feel the love

The love she feels isn't real. They just lust after her.
They'll be gone tomorrow. She's only their one-night stand.

1,2,3 1,2,3 drink

1,2,3 1,2,3 drink
1,2,3 1,2,3 drink
Throw em back, till I lose count
To forget that she's not really loved, she gets drunk.

I'm gonna swing from the chandelier, from the chandelier

Drunk, she tries something wild, just to feel alive. Everybody's staring at her.
Even though the guys aren't really staring at her, but up her skirt.

I'm gonna live like tomorrow doesn't exist
Like it doesn't exist
Tomorrow the guys will have left her...
She says "live like tomorrow doesn't exist",
She's just pretending and pushing her pain down again.

I'm gonna fly like a bird through the night,
She tries to believe she's wonderful
She wants to fly away from all this
Feel my tears as they dry
Her repressed feelings come out. She's crying, she's not happy.

I'm gonna swing from the chandelier, from the chandelier

She tries to forget her feelings, and just keep on swinging.

And I'm holding on for dear life,

Won't look down won't open my eyes

The feeling of flying away like a bird is her only feeling.
She's clinging to it. She's trying to forget what's really happening.

Keep my glass full until morning light,
'Cause I'm just holding on for tonight

Down from the chandelier, she goes back to getting drunk.

Help me, I'm holding on for dear life,
Won't look down won't open my eyes
Getting drunk is a way of not opening her eyes
Keep my glass full until morning light,
'Cause I'm just holding on for tonight
On for tonight

It's a way of living tonight to the max...
because when tomorrow comes she knows it'll be as terrible as the next line says.

Sun is up, I'm a mess
Waking up with a hangover, dirty, party's over.

Gotta get out now, gotta run from this

Get out of bed, question, "Why did I end up sleeping with him?"

Here comes the shame, here comes the shame

Other questions bring shame, "Who saw me last night?" "What did I do?"

1,2,3 1,2,3 drink

1,2,3 1,2,3 drink
1,2,3 1,2,3 drink
Throw em back till I lose count

To 'push down' the shame, the 'solution' is to get drunk again.
Getting drunk reminds her of the 'freedom' of last night.

I'm gonna swing from the chandelier, from the chandelier

I'm gonna live like tomorrow doesn't exist
Like it doesn't exist
I'm gonna fly like a bird through the night,
Feel my tears as they dry
I'm gonna swing from the chandelier, from the chandelier

And the vicious circle of pushing feelings down...
...then going wild at a party to actually feel something...
...which makes her realize she's crying, her lifestyle doesn't make her happy...
...so she uses alcohol to hide again.

And I'm holding on for dear life,

Won't look down won't open my eyes
Keep my glass full until morning light,
'Cause I'm just holding on for tonight
Help me, I'm holding on for dear life,
Won't look down won't open my eyes
Keep my glass full until morning light,
'Cause I'm just holding on for tonight
On for tonight

CONCLUSION
By being ashamed of her past, but covering up her feelings in drink,
by pretending to be happy when she's not,
Sia's chandelier-swinger has no future to hope in. ("Tomorrow doesn't exist.")
So even the party-night of living in the present is a struggle, "holding on for dear life."
