Rude - Magic!

The Experience: Nasri Atweh of Magic! asks a very reluctant 'old fashioned' father for permission to marry his daughter - "Can I have your daughter for the rest of my life?" He says "Never... 'til the day I die." Nasri complains "Why you gotta be so rude?" An upbeat and uplifting song about real love.

Music Video: Nasri tries to convince the very-unwilling father to give permission for their marriage. The father tries to get his daughter to love someone else. She doesn't give up. Neither does Nasri, and puts on his tuxedo for the wedding.

The meaning of MAGIC! Rude goes beyond a complaint against racism - Nasri is Palestinian, in the video the girl's father wants her to take up a white boyfriend, and Nasri complains "Don't you know I'm human too?" But the beat is too happy to be focusing on that.
For me, Rude's meaning is about lifelong love, which could only come out in to fullness in marriage. "Can I have your daughter for the rest of my life?" He asks, but the father responds "Never... till the day I die." While very different, both Nasri and his father-in-law see marriage, as something that begins with a wedding and only ends with death. That happy conviction is what gives the song such a bouncy feel.

Ask yourself: Do I believe in love "for the rest of my life"?

LYRICS:
Saturday morning jumped out of bed
And put on my best suit
Got in my car and raced like a jet
All the way to you
Knocked on your door with heart in my hand
To ask you a question
'Cause I know that you're an old-fashioned man, yeah

Can I have your daughter for the rest of my life?
Say yes, say yes 'cause I need to know
You say I'll never get your blessing 'til the day I die
Tough luck, my friend, but the answer is 'No'

Why you gotta be so rude?
Don't you know I'm human too?
Why you gotta be so rude?
I'm gonna marry her anyway

Marry that girl
Marry her anyway
Marry that girl
Yeah, no matter what you say
Marry that girl
And we'll be a family
Why you gotta be so
Rude

I hate to do this, you leave no choice
Can't live without her
Love me or hate me we will be boys
Standing at that altar
Or we will run away
To another galaxy, you know
You know she's in love with me
She will go anywhere I go

Can I have your daughter for the rest of my life?
Say yes, say yes 'cause I need to know
You say I'll never get your blessing 'til the day I die
Tough luck, my friend, 'cause the answer's still 'No"

Why you gotta be so rude?
Don't you know I'm human too?
Why you gotta be so rude?
I'm gonna marry her anyway

Marry that girl
Marry her anyway
Marry that girl
No matter what you say
Marry that girl
And we'll be a family
Why you gotta be so
Rude
Rude

Can I have your daughter for the rest of my life?
Say yes, say yes 'cause I need to know
You say, I'll never get your blessing 'til the day I die
Tough luck, my friend, but 'No' still means 'No'!

Why you gotta be so rude?
Don't you know I'm human too?
Why you gotta be so rude?
I'm gonna marry her anyway

Marry that girl
Marry her anyway
Marry that girl
No matter what you say
Marry that girl
And we'll be a family
Why you gotta be so
Rude
Why you gotta be so
Rude
Why you gotta be so rude?
