Mother & Father - Broods

The Experience: Brother and sister Caleb and Georgia Nott bring us a dreampop song about leaving home... and realizing all your Mother & Father meant to you.

Official Video: Initially, just the Broods standing nervously in white on black backgrounds - coinciding with parts of "Ever since I left my mother..." and "...since I left my father..." then dancing with whipping movements, now dressed in black on a white background. The meaning of the video shows their lack of certainties looking outside (when dressed in white) and their internal conflicts (when dressed in black). Georgia's first two nails are white, with M and F written over them: Mother & Father.

The meaning of Broods' Mother & Father is looking back a long time since you left home. When you were a child, "we knew what it meant to be loved." Mother and father showed us how to be loved, gave us ideas and courage to go ahead. Years later ("I am getting older") we've lost those certainties. It's much harder to know how to make my own life here... Disappointed with the way we're living ("I don't want to wake up lonely, I don't want to just be fine") It's time we remembered what our mother and father tried to tell us, the values we learnt at home. All I need is home.

Ask yourself: What values did my mother and father try to teach me?

LYRICS:
The nights are getting shorter
I don’t know where they go
And I am getting older
And it's starting to show

And ever since I left my mother
It’s much harder to know
How to make my own life here
How to make my own home

I don’t want to wake up lonely
I don’t want to just be fine
I don't want to keep on hoping
Forget what I have in mind
I don’t want to wake up lonely
I don’t want to just be fine
I don't want to keep on hoping
Forget what I have in mind
Forget what I have in mind

I remember the time when a kiss on the hand was enough
Cause we knew we were free
And we knew what it meant to be loved

But ever since I left my father
It’s much harder to know
How to live my own life here
When all I need is home

I don’t want to wake up lonely
I don’t want to just be fine
I don't want to keep on hoping
Forget what I have in mind
I don’t want to wake up lonely
I don’t want to just be fine
I don't want to keep on hoping
Forget what I have in mind
Forget what I have in mind

As faces start to fade
They’re slipping through my hands
It's where my heart was made
And my feet will always land

I don’t want to wake up lonely
I don’t want to just be fine
I don't want to keep on hoping
Forget what I have in mind
I don’t want to wake up lonely
I don’t want to just be fine
I don't want to keep on hoping
Forget what I have in mind
Forget what I have in mind
