Ghost - Ella Henderson

The Experience: With perfectly-timed mis-beats (warning bells) that will keep you longing for the full flow of the music, Ella will keep you listening to all her song Ghost... until the tune haunts you.

Music Video:

TAKE 1 - THE SCENES ARE: a young man pursued through the river by police, spliced with Ella in motel (hallway and room)... The next scenes show the young man happy with his girlfriend, at the motel, then taking her up-river. Splicing continues with a bearded man in a motel, who peels the photo of the girl off his mirror. After that, the bearded man drops the dead girl into the river. As the line "Give up the ghost" sounds, the young man despairs (beside the river, in a jean jacket, then in convict clothes). Lastly, the young man is running from the police cars (Ella taking his place every now and then), and breaks into the motel room, to find the bearded man, a crucifix, and the photo of the dead girl on the top right corner of the mirror.

TAKE 2 - THE INTERPRETATION: Ella plays the narrator, not a victim, at most the 'ghost' of the dead girl. The bearded man is evidently the girl's killer. The death of the girl haunts the young man, not the bearded man. 1st interpretation: bearded man and young man are split personalities, the young man only 'discovering' his darker side (or darker past) at the very end. 2nd interpretation: bearded man killed the girl out of jealousy or because he's a serial killer, but the boyfriend got the blame. He escapes and ends up confronting the real killer at the end, having brought the cops with him as 'back up' to finish the arrest.

TAKE 3 - THE MEANING: Ghost is about after a damaging relationship, not during. With this in mind, the scenes of boyfriend-girlfriend most easily become flashbacks, as the boyfriend goes over the terrible memories, escaping the police and tracking down the killer. At the end of the video, the memories are faced down, forced to go away. The big crucifix (at the end) holds the key to exorcising darker memories away like vampires.

Re-mix video: The ex-girlfriend wanders through the memory-haunted apartment of an ended relationship.

The meaning of Ghost is how to get over bad relationships. Here's my list:

First step - don't get into one. Ella says "My friends had you figured out" but she was too blind to see "your evil."

Second step - when a relationship begins to go astray, don't believe that him being naughty will make you happy. Ella admits, "Truth is I never learned." She thought misbehaving was cool, but she never realized its consequences: "I let you under my skin, 'cos I love living in the sin." If you love sin, you can't get him out. Or can she?

Third step - want real love, real respect. Reject lies like "naughty = cool." "Going to the river to pray" isn't enough, you have to stop wanting to be "living in sin" (aka. to be loved in a bad way) before you can find the baptism-like "something that can wash out the pain." If you realize he was never able to love you right, you'll finally stop wanting him to come back... and his ghost will stop haunting your heart.

Ask yourself: How do you get out of bad relationships? What steps would you follow?

LYRICS:

I keep going to the river to pray
'Cos I need something that can wash out the pain
And at most
I'm sleeping all these demons away
But your ghost, the ghost of you
It keeps me awake

My friends had you figured out
Yeah they saw what's inside of you
you tried to hide in another you
But your evil was coming through

These eyes sitting on the wall
Well they watch every move I make
Bright light living in the shade
Your cold heart makes my spirit shake

I had to go through hell to prove I'm not insane
Had to meet the devil just to know his name
And that's when my love was burning
Yeah it's still burning

I keep going to the river to pray
'Cos I need something that can wash out the pain
And at most
I'm sleeping all these demons away
But your ghost, the ghost of you
It keeps me awake

I keep going to the river to pray
'Cos I need something that can wash out the pain
And at most
I'm sleeping all these demons away
But your ghost, the ghost of you
It keeps me awake

Each time that I think you go
I turn round and you're creeping in
And I let you under my skin
'Cos I love living in the sin

Oh you never told me
True love was gonna hurt
True pain, I don't deserve
Truth is that I never learned

I keep going to the river to pray
'Cos I need something that can wash out the pain
And at most
I'm sleeping all these demons away
But your ghost, the ghost of you
It keeps me awake

I keep going to the river to pray
'Cos I need something that can wash out the pain
And at most
I'm sleeping all these demons away
But your ghost, the ghost of you
It keeps me awake

Give up the ghost
Give up the ghost
Give up the ghost
Stop the haunting baby

Give up the ghost
Give up the ghost
Give up the ghost
No more haunting baby

I keep going to the river...
I keep going to the river to pray
'Cos I need something that can wash out the pain
And at most
I'm sleeping all these demons away
But your ghost, the ghost of you
It keeps me awake

I keep going to the river to pray
'Cos I need something that can wash out the pain
And at most
I'm sleeping all these demons away
But your ghost, the ghost of you
It keeps me awake
