Human Contact - Catey Shaw

The Experience: Ooh Ooh doesn't matter... How do you solve all the difficulties of your relationships? Is sex the most important aspect of your relationships?

Music video: Catey Shaw stays true to her hipster self as Human Contact repeats a cycle different shots: wallpaper, close-up, croquet, kitchen counter and intercultural/intersexual dancing. However, underneath the hipster veneer her body language progressively slides towards the sexually submissive. The video ends with her lying down, head tilted back, completely available. And the availability is only one way. Except for the dance scenes where Catey Shaw doesn't even show up, there's no boyfriend in the video, and no relationship.

The Meaning of Human Contact: Catey Shaw's single sounds like any other run of the mill bubbly feel-good pop song... but there are deeper issues underneath the surface. For one, there's conflict - You just gave the look I must have said something you hate. Now you want to argue, you want to tell me everything that's wrong - conflict that isn't ever resolved. It's just ignored - ooh Ooh doesn't matter. Buried under sex - turn you out and work this mother out. In the end, human contact does solve our problems. But for Catey Shaw, the only human contact that exists is the hot and heavy kind. And that shows one very low opinion of humanity.

Ask yourself: Do you want more from a relationship than just sex? Is that all a relationship boils down to?

LYRICS:

You were talking loud
I was waiting for a noisy complaint
You just gave the look
I must have said something you hate

Now you want to argue
You want to tell me everything that's wrong
But I'm so distracted
'Cause they're playing my favorite song

Ooh Ooh doesn't matter
Ooh Ooh we're together
Ooh Ooh doesn't matter
No

If you just shut that pretty mouth
We'll forget what the fight's about
Come on just let me turn you out
With human contact

If you just shut that pretty mouth
Baby we, we could burn it down
Come on let's turn this sh-t around
With human contact

Baby, can't you see that your point's already made
Can't you let it go, let's listen to the music play
Right now I've forgot what we were even mad about
Let's quit sittin' here, let's work this mother out

Ooh Ooh doesn't matter
Ooh Ooh we're together
Ooh Ooh doesn't matter
No

If you just shut that pretty mouth
We'll forget what the fight's about
Come on just let me turn you out
With human contact

If you just shut that pretty mouth
Baby we, we could burn it down
Come on let's turn this sh-t around
