Blame - Calvin Harris ft. John Newman

The Experience: This ain't a feelin' I can keep... No one can carry around a life time's worth of guilt. The question is, how do you get rid of it? And how do you avoid it in the first place?

Music videoThe video deals with the guilt of betrayed innocence - both Calvin Harris and John Newman have picked two innocent girls up at the disco, and taken them home for a ride. Afterwards, they both stand alone with their backs to the sleeping girl- Harris at the window of his highrise and John on the edge of the bed - trying to cope with the fact that they went farther than they wanted to, and did something you can never undo. Meanwhile, the video cuts back and forth between different girls, until all of them take the plunge (into a sink, an ice bucket, a puddle and a bathtub), and after losing their virginity - the writhing in the water - and come up out of the water far from home in a trackless jungle.

The Meaning of Blame: Guilt is one of the hardest feelings to live with, because you're the reason the you and the people you care about are hurting. You hurt them. How do you get rid of that hurt? How do you heal guilt? Although the video walks a very fine line between glorifying what's going on or condemning it - and at times slips, it does have one very strong point in its favor: wrong is portrayed as wrong. Taking a girl's virginity without loving her and committing to her is wrong, and that's what they're guilty about. Blame acknowledges that. However, the weak point is just as clear cut. Blame walks another fine line, the line between honesty - actually owning up, accepting responsibility for the pain inflicted and the harm done - and excuses. The end result is all too human - don't blame it on me.

Ask yourself: Why is it so hard to forgive? And why is it so hard to own up to your own faults?

LYRICS:

Can't be sleepin'
Keep on waking
Is that the woman next to me?
Guilt is burning
Inside I'm hurting
This ain't a feeling I can't keep

So blame it on the night
Don't blame it on me
Don't blame it on me
Blame it on the night
Don't blame it on me
Don't blame it on me

Blame it on the night
Don't blame it on me
Don't blame it on me
So blame it on the night
Don't blame it on me
Don't blame it on me

Can't you see it?
I was manipulated by it
Too little to the dawn
I had no choice in this
I was a friend she missed
She needed me to talk

So blame it on the night
Don't blame it on me
Don't blame it on me
Blame it on the night
Don't blame it on me
Don't blame it on me

Blame it on the night
Don't blame it on me
Don't blame it on me
So blame it on the night
Don't blame it on me

Oh I'm so sorry, so sorry baby
Yeah
I got defense
Oh I promise (I'll be better this time, I will be better this time)

Don't blame it on me

Don't blame it on me
