Are You What You Want To Be? - Foster The People

The Experience: Foster the People give us a question Are You What You Want To Be?, while the lyrics question whether they know the answer to that question themselves.

Official Video: A series of shots from their world tours doesn't leave Foster The People with the answer. They can be famous, but they're still as alone as everyone else is as they struggle with their existential questions. The boat they're on leaves slowly, and they look back on the fading wake of what they've done. The question remains unresolved. Are they what they want to be?

The meaning of Are You What You Want To Be? is Foster The People asking that question of themselves. They're famous, from Champs-Élysées (Paris) to Ghana, to Belize. They sense the tensions and struggles of people all over the world. And they realize they're the voice of dissidents against injustice.
And then they get the chills. "The right words in the hands of dissidents with the fire Will rip apart the marrow from the bone of the liars." They could be the voice of a revolution, but they don't want to be "saying too much and ending a martyr." Then again, they don't want "to face God and say I was a coward," saying they knew they had a mission but they chickened out. Foster The People don't have an answer yet. At least they had the courage to ask the question, and to admit they're pulled two ways.
Being afraid doesn't mean you're not brave. Fearless men are just rash, stupid. The brave are the ones who know they are what they want to be, and no-one will stop them from being who they want to be.
Know your mission. Know your identity. Then you can be who you want to be.

Ask yourself: Are You What You Want To Be?

LYRICS:
I woke up on Champs-Élysées to the Djembe of Ghana
A fine lady from Belize said "You got the spirit of a Fela"
A young one dripping make-up put her hands out to holla
And I gave her what I got but couldn't handle her broken heart
The right words in the hands of dissidents with the fire
Will rip apart the marrow from the bone of the liars
Well I'm afraid of saying too much and ending a martyr
But even more so I'm afraid to face God and say I was a coward, yeah

Will all these things I wait for revelation
These things make me want to duck for cover
With all these things I wait for revolution
These things ask the biggest question to me
And it's are you what you want to be
So are you what you want to be?

The war machines will put out both its hands for a dollar
It's drinking at the table with the chrome hand guerrillas
The young ones dripping make-up lift her leg up to holla
Well, I told her what she's got should be protected in the arms of love
The right things in the hands of dissidents with the fire
Will rip apart the marrow from the bone of the liars
Well I'm afraid of saying too much and ending a martyr
But even more so I'm afraid to face God and say I was a coward

Will all these things I wait for revelation
These things make me want to duck for cover
With all these things I wait for revolution
These things ask the biggest question to me
And it's are you what you want to be
So are you what you want to be?

Are you what you want to be
So are you what you want to be?
Are you what you want to be
So are you what you want to be?
Are you what you want to be
So are you what you want to be?
