I Bet My Life - Imagine Dragons

The Experience: I've told a million lies but now I tell a single truth: there's you in everything I do... please forgive me for all I've done... You've left, moved on. You've turned your back on the people who cared about you, raised you, loved you. But now you realize your mistake. Their love made you who you are. And you ask for forgiveness for the things you can't fix...

Music video: Two boys fight on the edge of a river until the underdog - in blue - knocks out the protagonist - in white. He drifts, and then gets sucked through the dam's turbines. Underwater, he passes out, dreams of finding himself first alone in his house - now underwater - second, alone in a sailboat, third, alone in the same boat, now flying sailing through the air after not going off a waterfall, and finally, falling out of the same boat, and into a crowd of fans in Phoenix, Arizona, where he crowdsurfs right in front of town hall. He finally wakes up when the other boy pulls him out of the water in the lake at the bottom of the dam. He made it... but changed a lot. The winner is still angry, even if he does pull our protagonist out of the water. But our boy has suffered loneliness in many forms: solitude, adventure, fear, and in the crowd, and he's not the fighter he once was. He's just happy to have someone at his side.

The Meaning of I Bet My Life: The cover art says a lot on its own. Two sets of hands both clutch and let go. And each hand carries a lot of baggage. The man's heart is a hollow empty hole with a bird (his life) about to fly the coop? Coming back home? The man wears a halo? Or just a hat?

The lyrics also tell a mixed story. Our hero - or villain - was loved. He rejected that love and went his own way. But deep down, he still recognizes and trusts the love of the person he rejected. And he asks for forgiveness - emphasized by the meditative, repentant bridge. Because he's finally thankful... and that might just be his ticket to redemption, and a halo.

Ask yourself: Is your life your own, or do you have a lot of people to thank?

LYRICS:

(I bet, I bet, I bet, I bet my life)

I know I took the path that you would never want for me
I know I let you down, didn't I?
So many sleepless nights
Where you were waiting up on me
Well I'm just a slave unto the night
Now remember when I told you that's the last you'll see of me
Remember when I broke you down to tears
I know I took the path that you would never want for me
I gave you hell through all the years

So I, I bet my life, I bet my life
I bet my life on you
I, I bet my life, I bet my life
I bet my life on you

I've been around the world but never in my wildest dreams
Would I come running home to you
I've told a million lies
But now I tell a single truth
There's you in everything I do
Now remember when I told you that's the last you'll see of me
Remember when I broke you down to tears
I know I took the path that you would never want for me
I gave you hell through all the years

So I, I bet my life, I bet my life
I bet my life on you
I, I bet my life, I bet my life
I bet my life on you

Don't tell me that I'm wrong
I've walked that road before
I left you on your own
And please believe them when they say
That's left for yesterday
And the records that I've played
Please forgive for all I've done

So I, I bet my life, I bet my life
I bet my life on you
I, I bet my life, I bet my life
I bet my life on you

So I, I bet my life, I bet my life
I bet my life on you
I, I bet my life, I bet my life
I bet my life on you
