Take Me to Church - Hozier

The Experience: This love seems divine, the answer to all longings, even the religious. I should've worshipped her sooner.  Yet the song continues: I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies. So a lying goddess, and a dog of a lover. Where exactly is this going?

Music video: Shows scenes of two male homosexuals making love and one of them being beaten to death by a group that resembles the Ku Klux Klan. The song constantly refers to the lover as "she," so there is no real connection between the song and the video. But according to Hozier there is a connection. He claims his song is "about humanity at its most natural, and how that is undermined ceaselessly by religious organisations and those who would have us believe they act in its interests" (See article here). I find it hard to believe that many of the believers among us would identify with the thugs in this video, and many would disagree with his concept of "natural humanity".

The Meaning of Take Me To Church: My lover is my goddess and my religion and I worship her. A love relationship can seem like an ecstasy, and seems to fulfill all desires. What desire is deeper than the desire for love? The song nonetheless leaves us wondering if there just might be something missing. Fresh poison every week, a shrine of lies, deathless death, our gentle sin, is this really a description of love? Or is there something more that could raise all this up to another level and give it a greater beauty?

Ask yourself: Who or what do I worship and why? Do I run from the God-question?

LYRICS:

My lover's got humour
She's the giggle at a funeral
Knows everybody's disapproval
I should've worshipped her sooner
If the Heavens ever did speak
She is the last true mouthpiece
Every Sunday's getting more bleak
A fresh poison each week
'We were born sick,' you heard them say it
My church offers no absolutes
She tells me 'worship in the bedroom'
The only heaven I'll be sent to
Is when I'm alone with you
I was born sick, but I love it
Command me to be well
Amen. Amen. Amen

Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

If I'm a pagan of the good times
My lover's the sunlight
To keep the Goddess on my side
She demands a sacrifice
To drain the whole sea
Get something shiny
Something meaty for the main course
That's a fine looking high horse
What you got in the stable?
We've a lot of starving faithful
That looks tasty
That looks plenty
This is hungry work

Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

No masters or kings when the ritual begins
There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin
In the madness and soil of that sad earthly scene
Only then I am human
Only then I am clean
Amen. Amen.
