Every Breaking Wave - U2

The Experience: U2 describe their youth throughout the album Songs Of Innocence. In the song Every Breaking Wave, they tackle living in a ceaselessly changing culture. The guitar loop adds a haunting touch, while Bono's vocals almost seem exhausted, tired of chasing every breaking wave.
Official Video: Still waiting.

The meaning of Every Breaking Wave uses the sea to describe a world of constant contradictions and changes. In the summer (of youth), the sea seemed fun, every breaking wave knew there'll be one more... in winter (having aged), the same ceaseless changing is like a fallen leaf, that winter wouldn't leave it alone. By then, Bono questions "Are we so helpless against the tide?"
Each year brings a new wave of fads, gadgets, TV shows, and music. And they'll all be gone next year. Living chasing every breaking wave is exhausting, there's no security. The only rocks are the ones that drown you - running out of energy, friends or money.
U2 walks away from it all. They tell us to try to hear the Captain's voice, someone who is safe from drowning, a Captain who can lift us out of the breaking waves. (Although they're not sure they can listen while they preach.

Ask yourself: What was last year's "in thing"? What is this year's? Why are they always changing?

LYRICS:
Every breaking wave on the shore
Tells the next one "there'll be one more"
And every gambler knows that to lose
Is what you're really there for

Summer I was fearless
Now I speak into an answer phone
Like every fallen leaf on the breeze
Winter wouldn't leave it alone, alone

If you go...
If you go your way and I go mine
Are we so...
Are we so helpless against the tide?
Baby, every dog on the street
Knows that we're in love with defeat
Are we ready to be swept off our feet
And stop chasing every breaking wave?

Every sailor knows that the sea
Is a friend made enemy
Every shipwrecked soul knows what it is
To live without intimacy

I thought I heard the Captain's voice
But it's hard to listen while you preach
Like every broken wave on the shore
This is as far as I could reach

If you go...
If you go your way and I go mine
Are we so...
Are we so helpless against the tide?
Baby, every dog on the street
Knows that we're in love with defeat
Are we ready to be swept off our feet
And stop chasing every breaking wave?

The sea knows where are the rocks
And drowning is no sin
You know where my heart is
The same place that yours has been
We know that we fear to win
And so we end before we begin
Before we begin

If you go...
If you go your way and I go mine
Are we so...
Are we so helpless against the tide?
Baby, every dog on the street
Knows that we're in love with defeat
Are we ready to be swept off our feet
And stop chasing every breaking wave?
