Raised By Wolves - U2

The Experience: Raised By Wolves shouts out U2's memories of the violent Ireland when they grew up, centering on the 1974 Dublin and Monaghan car-bombings that killed 33 civilians. Raised By Wolves also shouts out a response, trying to wake us up to who we should be.
Official Video: Still waiting. (But this unofficial video is pretty cool.)

The meaning of Raised By Wolves begins with the founding story of Rome. Legendarily, Romulus and Remus founded Rome, but they'd survived only because a she-wolf had raised them when society wanted them dead.
In Raised By Wolves, U2 describes and condemns the religion-fuelled violence of Ireland when they grew up, especially the anti-Catholic Ulster Defense Force car-bombing. "The worst things in the world are justified by belief." The lyrics clearly call out the "Blue mink Ford" with the numberplate 1385-WZ that was one of the 1974 car-bombs. U2 demands that we move on. If faith means violence, "I don't believe anymore."
U2's own members are from different faiths. Like Romulus and Remus, they've survived a society that wanted them apart, that would have destroyed the unity of U2 itself. U2 see themselves as raised by wolves, growing up with beliefs stronger than society's.

Ask yourself: What is my reaction to seeing terrorist violence on TV? Do I change channels? Or do I promise myself to change society?

LYRICS:
Face down on a broken street
There’s a man in the corner in a pool of misery
I’m in a white van as a red sea covers the ground
Metal crash I can’t tell what it is
But I take a look and now I’m sorry I did.
5:30 on a Friday night 33 good people cut down

I don’t believe anymore
I don’t believe anymore

Face down on a pillow of shame
There are some girls with a needle
Trying to spell my name
My body’s not a canvas
My body’s now a toilet wall

I don’t believe anymore
I don’t believe anymore

Raised by wolves
Stronger than fear
Raised by wolves
We were raised by wolves
Raised by wolves
Stronger than fear
If I open my eyes,
You disappear

I don’t believe anymore
I don’t believe anymore

Boy sees his father
Crushed under the weight
Of a cross in a passion
Where the passion is hate.
Blue mink Ford,
I’m gonna detonate and you’re dead
Blood in the house,
Blood on the street
The worst things in the world are justified by belief
Registration 1385-WZ

I don’t believe anymore
I don’t believe anymore

Raised by wolves
Stronger than fear
Raised by wolves
We were raised by wolves
Raised by wolves
Stronger than fear
If I open my eyes,
You disappear
