Phoenix - Molly Sandén

The Experience: Hit me one more time. One, two, three, just give me more. 'Cause with every strike I'll be stronger than before... Gotta die to stay alive... The key to suffering isn't learning to grin and bear it. It's knowing that the pain is your path to victory.

Music video: Molly Sandén is reborn alone in the snowy ashes of a cold fire. The rest of the music video is a flashback - you have to die to stay alive. You have to die to the alcohol, the drugs, the scale that symbolizes obsession with weight, the smoking habit. You also have to grow up and leave childhood's securities - the barbie doll - behind. A dictionary with the entry "gay" also goes into the fire, but it's not clear whether Sandén is critiquing discrimination against gays, or the gay lifestyle itself. All of those things go into the fire, and then Molly follows them, embracing the hurt and sorrow of a whole town, and dying in the flames to rise again.

The Meaning of Phoenix: Life is full of noise, ashes, trouble, and war. Your demons are waiting. But the key to victory isn't running from that pain. It's facing it, and fighting through it. Gotta die to stay alive. 'Cause I'm falling just to rise. That's an easy message to sing, but a hard one to live. Unless you have someone or something to trust in. Someone to hold your hand through the fire and the pain. That's the only thing that's missing through Molly Sandén's otherwise powerful Phoenix.

Ask yourself: Do you hide from the pain? Do you run? Do you have someone to hold your hand and keep you keeping on?

LYRICS:

White noise in my head
Burning ashes on the floor
Trouble in the air
I didn't sign up for this war

Let the fire in
All my demons from before
'Cause I'm not afraid
I'm ready to explode

Like a phoenix, like a phoenix
Like a phoenix, like a phoenix
Like a phoenix, like a phoenix
Gotta die to come alive

'Cause I'm falling just to rise
Falling just to fly
Gotta die to stay alive
I'm burning just to fight
Burning to ignite
Gotta die to stay alive

Like a phoenix, like a phoenix
Like a phoenix, like a phoenix
Like a phoenix, like a phoenix
Gotta die to stay alive

Hit me one more time
One, two, three, just give me more
'Cause with every strike
I'll be stronger than before

I used to fear the night
I used to close my eyes
Now I need the dark so I can see the stars shine

I'm falling just to rise
Falling just to fly
Gotta die to stay alive
I'm burning just to fight
Burning to ignite
Gotta die to stay alive

Like a phoenix, like a phoenix (Oh)
Like a phoenix, like a phoenix (Oh)
Like a phoenix, like a phoenix
Gotta die to stay alive

So watch me burn
Go feed my flame
'Cause it's my time
To rise again

So watch me burn
Go feed my flame
'Cause it's my time
To fly again (again, again, again)

White noise in my head
Burning ashes on the floor

'Cause I'm falling just to rise
Falling just to fly
Gotta die to stay alive (to stay alive)
I'm Burning just to fight
Burning to ignite
Gotta die to stay alive (Oh)

Like a phoenix, like a phoenix (like a phoenix)
Like a phoenix, like a phoenix (like a phoenix)
Like a phoenix, like a phoenix
Like a phoenix, like a phoenix
