Ghosttown - Madonna

The Experience: Madonna returns to the scene with her new single that challenges listeners to look deep inside themselves to find the strength to face a world in chaos... in order to begin turning it around.

Music video: Madonna awakes alone in a battered apartment, apparently the only survivor of the nuclear holocaust that wiped out her family and the entire city of New York. She wanders alone through the burned out city in search of anything the help end her loneliness and in her anger at finding no one inadvertently alerts the only other two survivors (a man and a small boy). They follow her along her walk through town, confront her, and after a brief dance (which could also be interpreted as a fight/struggle) join forces to face the challenges ahead of them.

The Meaning: In Ghosttown Madonna faces up to the fact that the world we live in is not always a pretty place and that often those we count on only add to the pain by running away when the going gets tough. However she also knows she is not the only one who feels so lonely and hopeless and so throughout the entire song she is constantly offering her support to her partner, reminding him she is there for him as well. She will stand by him even if they are the only ones left fighting for the light in the midst of a Ghosttown. They might not be able to control what everyone else does, but they can start the revolution. Being lights of love and hope in the darkness that draw everyone else to follow them out of the circle of pain.

Ask yourself: Do I have the courage to break the circle of suffering by being a light of hope and love for those around me?

LYRICS:

Maybe it was all too much
Too much for a man to take
Everything's bound to break
Sooner or later, sooner or later

You're all that I can trust
Facing the darkest days
Everyone ran away
We're gonna stay here, we're gonna stay here

Ah, ah
I know you're scared tonight
Ah, ah
I'll never leave your side

When it all falls, when it all falls down
I'll be your fire when the lights go out
When there's no one, no one else around
We'll be two souls in a ghost town
When the world gets cold I'll be your cover
Let's just hold on to each other
When it all falls, when it all falls down
We'll be two souls in a ghost town

Tell me how we got this far
Every man for himself
Everything's gone to hell
We gotta stay strong, we're gonna hold on

This world has turned to dust
All we've got left is love
Might as well start with us
Singing a new song, something to build on

I know we're alright
'Cause we'll never be alone in this mad mad, in this mad mad world
Even with no light
We're gonna shine like gold in this mad mad, in this mad mad world

When it all falls when it all falls down
I'll be your fire when the lights go out
When there's no one, no one else around
We'll be two souls in a ghost town

When it all falls, when it all falls down
I'll be your fire when the lights go out
When there's no one, no one else around
We'll be two souls in a ghost town
When the world gets cold I'll be your cover
Let's just hold on to each other
When it all falls, when it all falls down
We'll be two souls in a ghost town
