Believe - Mumford & Sons

The Experience: Mumford & Sons lose the banjo but keep their indie style. Believe is the first single for their upcoming album Wilder Mind. Believe uses bluegrass sound and rock guitar to express both confusion and hope.

Live Performance Video

Video: The Audio video is a glide through night-time London. It blurs, then focuses looking over an empty park bench and the lights of London's skyline. The meaning of the video shows a search, which ends in either emptiness (no-one's there on the bench) or hope (London's lights). You choose.

The meaning of Mumford and Sons' single Believe is a hoped-for healing just before the breakup happens. They've stopped talking, so he's left trying "to guess what's on her mind." His guesses becomes just ideas, "misconceiving what else this could've been."
He prefers pretending love exists to that silence of just guessing. "Say something, something like you love me." "Tell me how to lie."
In the end, the song hangs open-ended. "I don’t even know if I believe / I don't even know if I wanna believe / Anything you're trying to say to me."
Can they believe in each other again? Can they talk over, and overcome their disappointments and misconceptions in each other? I suppose the way we take this song reveals what we Believe about love's strength, or failure.

Ask Yourself: Do I believe in the people who've let me down? Can I believe in loving them again?

LYRICS:
You may call it in this evening
But you’ve only lost the night
Present all your pretty feelings
May they comfort you tonight
And I’m climbing over something
And I’m running through these walls

I don’t even know if I believe
I don’t even know if I believe
I don’t even know if I believe
Everything you’re trying to say to me

I had the strangest feeling
Your world’s not all it seems
So tired of misconceiving
What else this could’ve been

I don’t even know if I believe
I don’t even know if I believe
I don’t even know if I believe
Everything you're trying to say to me

Open up my eyes
Tell me how to lie
This is never gonna go our way
If I’m gonna have to guess what’s on your mind

Say something, say something,
Something like you love me
Does she wanna move away
From the noise of this place

I don’t even know if I believe
I don’t even know if I believe
I don't even know if I (wanna) believe
Anything you're trying to say to me

Open up my eyes
Tell me how to lie
This is never gonna go our way
