The Promise - Emma Blackery

www.lastfm.de
The Experience: The Promise addresses the challenging problems of depression, bullying, cutting, and suicide all in just 4 1/2 minutes reminding us why it is worth standing up to the pain and holding on for a new and brighter day.

Music video: The video splices together scenes of Emma performing the song on stage with the life of a young girl suffering from depression and bullying that have driven her into cutting. For her it is a battle just to get up each morning and to go through the routine of daily life. This is only made worse by the bullying she receives at school which we see in the sign on the black board encouraging her to kill herself and her constant isolation. In the face of this she runs to a bathroom stall to cut herself yet again. Coming home however she finds little support as her own father sees her more as a problem then someone in need of his love and care. Thankfully her mother comes to her aid before she does anything drastic and from there her life takes a new turn as we witness her begin to gain confidence in herself as she heads out in search of Emma performing the song on stage.

The Meaning: The Promise faces up to problem of self-injury in the face of challenges like depression ...Today, you don't want to get out of bed. There are so many thoughts in your head. Like you'd be better off dead. And school bullying ...And even if you feel as though you have no friends, except the blade that cuts your skin. Reminding us that no matter how bad the pain might get we are priceless and should never give up the fight for there are really people out there who care about and who are counting on us to also be there for them... if you go, my heart would break, just hold on one more day.

Ask yourself: Am I able to recognize the people in my life who need my help? Do I have the courage to reach out to and support them?

LYRICS:

Today, you don't want to get out of bed.
There are so many thoughts in your head.
Like you'd be better off dead, better off dead
But let me tell you,
There's a whole world waiting for you.
It's hard to believe but it's true, whoa oh
So just hold on for me, hold on for me.

'Cause I believe if you go,
My heart would break, just hold on one more day.
Because you are so beautiful, whoa oh,
I promise you this, I promise you this
And you are more than capable, whoa oh
Just believe in yourself when nobody else is listening

And I may not even know your name,
But I promise you I've felt the same.
As you do right now, you'll make it somehow
And even if you feel as though you have no friends
Except the blade that cuts your skin
You're better than this, you're worth more than this
And I believe if you go my heart would break
Just hold on one more day.

Because you are so beautiful, whoa oh
I promise you this, I promise you this.
And you are more than capable, whoa oh
Just believe in yourself when nobody else is listening.

And If you go I think my heart would break
And if you go I think my heart would break
Yeah...

Because you are so beautiful, whoa oh
I promise you this, I promise you this.
And you are more than capable, whoa oh
Just believe in yourself when nobody else is listening,
You are so beautiful whoa oh
I promise you this, I promise you this
And you are more than capable, whoa oh
Just believe in yourself when nobody else is listening.
