The A Team - Ed Sheeran

The Experience: Take a walk down any city street and you are bound to find someone begging, selling trinkets, or something similar. What leads a person to such a humiliating way of life? In The A Team Ed Sheeran helps us understand the part of these people's stories we normally never know.

Music video: The video follows the last day of a young drug addict (Angel) giving us a brief look into her hard life. She wakes up on a park bench and spends her day selling magazines and begging to make ends meet. Along the way there are some heart breaking scenes of vulnerability and innocence: smiling in the sun shine, smiling at passers bye, chatting briefly with Ed Sheeran when he buys one of her magazines and thinking of buying a flower with her scarce funds. Each of these moments reveals the priceless and broken young lady hidden behind her tough facade. As the day goes on everyone continues to ignore her and in the end she comes up short on funds despite all her attempts. As the evening continues her eyes reveal the inner struggle as she resists the demands of her addiction. Sadly the addiction wins out in the end and she turns to the only option she believes she has left, selling herself on a street corner. She puts on a tough facade for the buyer and his lackeys, but when she is alone the truth again shows through in her tears. After buying her drugs she runs back to her apartment to smoke away the pain, only this time she takes too much and her escape becomes permanent.

The Meaning: The A Team shows the effect of drugs ...breathing in snowflakes... on a young woman's life. What probably started out as curiosity or a means of escape ...Been this way since eighteen... has turned into a serious addiction that has left her in poverty and lead her into prostitution in order to afford the drugs she can no longer live without ...she's in the Class A Team. Sadly this song ends with her death ...for angels to die... from an overdose, but does it have to end that way?

Ask yourself: Who are the A Team people in my life whom everyone else ignores? What can I do to reach out and pull them back from the edge?

LYRICS:

White lips, pale face
Breathing in snowflakes
Burnt lungs, sour taste
Light's gone, day's end
Struggling to pay rent
Long nights, strange men

And they say
She's in the Class A Team
Stuck in her daydream
Been this way since eighteen
But lately her face seems
Slowly sinking, wasting
Crumbling like pastries
And they scream
The worst things in life come free to us
'Cause we're just under the upper hand
And go mad for a couple grams
And she don't want to go outside tonight
And in a pipe she flies to the Motherland
Or sells love to another man
It's too cold outside
For angels to fly
Angels to fly

Ripped gloves, raincoat
Tried to swim and stay afloat
Dry house, wet clothes
Loose change, bank notes
Weary-eyed, dry throat
Call girl, no phone

And they say
She's in the Class A Team
Stuck in her daydream
Been this way since eighteen
But lately her face seems
Slowly sinking, wasting
Crumbling like pastries
And they scream
The worst things in life come free to us
'Cause we're just under the upper hand
And go mad for a couple grams
And she don't want to go outside tonight
And in a pipe she flies to the Motherland
Or sells love to another man
It's too cold outside
For angels to fly
An angel will die
Covered in white
Closed eye
And hoping for a better life
This time, we'll fade out tonight
Straight down the line

And they say
She's in the Class A Team
Stuck in her daydream
Been this way since eighteen
But lately her face seems
Slowly sinking, wasting
Crumbling like pastries
They scream
The worst things in life come free to us
And we're all under the upper hand
Go mad for a couple grams
And we don't want to go outside tonight
And in a pipe we fly to the Motherland
Or sell love to another man
It's too cold outside
For angels to fly
Angels to fly
To fly, fly
For angels to fly, to fly, to fly
For angels to die
