Even God - Charlotte Church
The Experience: Even God can't change the past... what matters though is what we make of the future. When love goes wrong we have to be able to get up and carry on, building a new life on the foundations that remain or even upon new foundations if necessary.
Music video: The video follows Charlotte through various moments of her day as she mourns over her broken relationship. What most strikes the viewer about the video is how you never see anyone approach her. There are other people in the background, but in her pain she is really looking for someone to reach out to her despite the independent tone of the lyrics. Sadly this never happens and in the two brief moments when she lets down her guard and vulnerably looks for help she finds no one to come to her aid. Thus as the video ends she returns home alone and lying back on her bed asks "why?" as everything fades to blackness.
The Meaning: Even God tells the story of Charlotte's pain when she is abandoned by the one she loves ...no matter how may tears I've cried, yes, I thought this love would last. She puts on a tough facade ...darling, when I'm hurt, that's when I'm satisfied... and pretends that she does not care ...Tell me what it's worth, to pursue the holy life. But all of this is just an attempt to escape the pain because deep down ...I can see your face, even when I close my eyes... she is still lonely and looking for someone to support her as she faces this new and scary chapter of her life.
Ask yourself: When I am hurting do I isloate myself from everyone else or do I look outwards and let others help me?
LYRICS:
Even God can't change the past
No matter how many tears I've cried
Yes, I thought this love would last
Who am I to question why
Who am I
Darling, when I'm hurt
That's when I'm satisfied
Tell me what it's worth
To pursue the holy life
I can see your face
Even when I close my eyes
I can give you love
Even when I've been denied
Who, who's loving who
Who, who's fooling who
Even God can't change the past
No matter how many tears I've cried
Yes, I thought this love would last
Who am I to question why
Who am I
(Text below in italics is omited in music video)
Darling, what is love?
If it never gets you high
Should we sit and wait
While the wasted years roll by
Is there time to say?
If I lied, I apologize
Never go away
Please stay here by my side
Who, who's fooling who
Who, who's loving who
Even God can't change the past
No matter how many tears I've cried
Yes, I thought this dream would last
Who am I to question why
Who am I
They try to break you
They try to steal your stars
If they ever take you
Just remember who you are
They try to hate you
Just like some love bizarre
It's a sign of weakness
To be afraid of what you are
Who, who's loving who
Who, who's fooling who
Even God can't change the past
No matter how many tears I've cried
Yes, I thought this pain would pass
Who am I to question why
