Where Are Ü Now - Skrillex and Diplo ft. Justin Bieber

The Experience: I need you... You've loved and loved, and served without complaint. You've given all you have and emptied every last reserve. When will you get acknowledged? When will you feel something in return?

Music video: The video adds a unique twist to the lyrics' deep haunting question: while Justin Bieber is asking when his love and faithful selfless giving will be returned, fans paint their thoughts and interpretations onto stills of the Canadian singer. Those paintings are a shifting collage that covers over his song with their judgements. Some flattering, some not. Some true, some subjective. It's hard when the people you try to love misinterpret and judge you instead of loving you back. Some of the phrases they painted are:swag, where are u now, angel and demon, trom was here, badass, pocket yellow, stellow, take us there, ruff ruff, money, where are you selena, random white guy, smoke weed everyday, hollywood, life, harmony, inspire, light, wisdom, truth, love, unity, believe, faith, energy, passion, craft your music. It's a mix of bad, good, stupid, and grateful. And that's what you get back when you love.

The Meaning of Where Are Ü Now: Skrillex and Diplo, in their Jack Ü incarnation, team up with Justin Bieber to offer some deep thoughts on selfless giving. The lyrics paraphrase the scene in the Gospel of Matthew, when Jesus says "I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me... whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me." Just like those heavenbound people, Justin Bieber sings "I gave you the key when the door wasn't open, just admit it. See, I gave you faith, turned your doubt into hoping. When you broke down I didn't leave you. I gave you attention when nobody else was paying. I gave you the shirt off my back... to keep you warm. I showed you the game everybody else was playing. I was on my knees when nobody else was praying." But then Justin Bieber asks, like so many of us, "Where are you now that I need you?" It's a bitter complaint underlined by the electronic edge that creeps into Justin's voice - where are you now - right after the phrase "Now I'm alone and my joy's turned to moping." That complaint turns into a prayer that echoes as the music fades out - I need you the most.

Ask yourself: When and how does unfailing love get returned?

LYRICS:

I need you (the) I need you
I need you (the) I need you
I need you, you, you, you, you, you
I need you (the) I need you
I need you (the) I need you
I need you, you, you, you, you, you
You, you, you
I need you the most

I gave you the key when the door wasn't open, just admit it
See, I gave you faith, turned your doubt into hoping, can’t deny it
Now I’m all alone and my joy's turned to moping
Tell me, where are you now that I need you?
Where are you now?
Where are you now that I need you?
Couldn't find you anywhere
When you broke down I didn't leave you
I was by your side
So where are you now that I need you?
Where are you now that I need you?

Where are you now that I need you?
Where are you now that I need you?
Where are you now that I need you?

I gave you attention when nobody else was paying
I gave you the shirt off my back, what you saying?
To keep you warm
I showed you the game everybody else was playing, that's for sure
And I was on my knees when nobody else was praying, oh Lord

Where are you now that I need you?
Where are you now that I need you?

I need you (the) I need you
I need you (the) I need you
I need you, you, you, you, you, you
Where are you now that I need you?
I need you (the) I need you
I need you (the) I need you
I need you, you, you, you, you, you
I need you the most

Where are you now that I need you?
Where are you now that I need you?
Where are you now that I need you?
I need you the most (I need you the most, I need you the most)
