Writing's On The Wall - Sam Smith

by Simon Cleary

The Experience: Writing's On The Wall opens with Bond-like grandeur and ends with a resonating echo. Sam Smith's voice also eases back and forth from tenor to falsetto and back again, but the notes are always tragic. The single for Spectre begins with great notes of confidence, but that self-assured style soon fades away before the sense of doom: the Writing's On The Wall.

Video: Splicing scenes from the Spectre trailer and Sam Smith's singing where other scenes took place, the clips emphasize the loneliness of both Bond and Smith. Bond's haunted by the list of former agents who died, and by the Spectre agency out to destroy him inside, and then kill him outside. Sam Smith ends the video and the song with passion, but for the first time his face is silent while his voice carries out its final note. The meaning shows the inner struggle of this song is greater than what we can see on the outside.

The meaning of Sam Smith Writing's On The Wall is about staying for love or surviving all by myself
Lines describe I've spent a life-time running and I always get away. But Bond feels haunted by (a spectre) the past, and by something that makes me want to stay. Love would have him stay, and he knows there's no use in running. But James Bond is a survivor, used to cutting ties and losing lovers. He wants to feel love run through my blood, and stop just surviving. But that means changing all his instincts of going solo. Tell me, is this where I have to give it all up?
Survivors (like James Bond) face the ultimate question: continue surviving, but alone... or give up escaping and be rescued, loved, but then need someone else. If I risk it all, could you break my fall?
The only thing that's certain is that things have to change: the writing's on the wall.

Ask yourself: I can survive by isolating myself from needing love and needing others - but then how do I live? Do I believe only the love of others will save me in my need - could you break my fall?

LYRICS:
I've been here before
But always hit the floor
I've spent a life-time running
And I always get away
But with you I'm feeling something
That makes me want to stay

I'm prepared for this
I never shoot to miss
But I feel like a storm is coming
If I'm gonna make it through the day
Then there's no use in running
This is something I gotta face

If I risk it all
Could you break my fall?

How do I live?
How do I breathe?
When you're not here I'm suffocating
I want to feel love run through my blood
Tell me is this where I give it all up?
For you I have to risk it all
Cause the writing's on the wall

A million shards of glass
That haunt me from my past
As the stars begin to gather
And the light begins to fade
When all hope begins to shatter
Know that I won't be afraid

If I risk it all
Could you break my fall?

How do I live?
How do I breathe?
When you're not here I'm suffocating
I want to feel love run through my blood
Tell me is this where I give it all up?
For you I have to risk it all
Cause the writing's on the wall

The writing's on the wall

How do I live?
How do I breathe?
When you're not here I'm suffocating
I want to feel love run through my blood
Tell me is this where I give it all up?
How do I live?
How do I breathe?
When you're not here I'm suffocating
I want to feel love run through my blood
Tell me is this where I give it all up?
For you I have to risk it all
Cause the writing's on the wall
