Confident - Demi Lovato

The ExperienceI run this show. So leave the lights on. No, you can't make me behave... Demi lashes out at the negative self image that held her back for so long. It has to go. There's more to her, and the show will go on without what held her back. She's more than her old chains...

Music video: An imprisoned Demi Lovato is given what seems to be a second chance by a mysterious old man, but her new identity - the bar code burnt onto her forearm that offers a new life and sense of belonging - is actually a ticket back to jail. Only when she and her nemesis - Michelle Rodriguez - see each others' identical bar codes do they realize that they're being played. And then it's violent game over for their handler. The underlining elements of the video: treason and betrayal. And they're exposed when Demi and Michelle both rebel against the identity that someone else has imposed on them.

The Meaning of Confident: From the start, Demi has made it clear in an interview (below) that Confident is a personal statement, "The pre-chorus says it best where it says you've had me underrated. I've wanted to shout that from the top of my lungs for years now. I've never been confident enough in my own skin to feel sexy. Now that I'm feeling great and I'm confident, I'm proud of the skin I'm in and I'm wanting to share that with the world..." She was the first one to underrate herself. Confident is all about the long road from to total pride in the skin that she's in. It's an in your face rejection of the negativity that held her back. While we congratulate Demi for making that trek, one doubt: body and self image are important, but is "sexy" really the ideal? What about the people who will never be "sexy"? What if you're an amputee? What if - like Demi herself - you're not always "perfect"? Second, is sexy really the best you can aspire to? Sexy is only skin deep... and while skin is important, what's underneath is what really matters. Real people are deeper. So what's wrong with being confident? Nothing... as long as your confidence is more than skin deep.

Ask yourself: What do you base your confidence on? Looks? Image? Something deeper?

LYRICS:

Are you ready?

It's time for me to take it
I'm the boss right now
Not gonna fake it
Not when you go down
Cause this is my game
And you better come to play

I used to hold my freak back
Now I'm letting go
I make my own choice
B-tch, I run this show
So leave the lights on
No, you can't make me behave

So you say I'm complicated
That I must be outta my mind
But you had me underrated
Rated, rated, rated

What's wrong with being, what's wrong with being
What's wrong with being confident?
What's wrong with being, what's wrong with being
What's wrong with being confident?

It's time to get the chains out
Is your tongue tied up?
Cause this is my ground
And I'm dangerous
And you can get out
But it's all about me tonight

So you say I'm complicated
That I must be outta my mind
But you had me underrated
Rated, rated, rated

What's wrong with being, what's wrong with being
What's wrong with being confident?
What's wrong with being, what's wrong with being
What's wrong with being confident?
What's wrong with being, what's wrong with being
What's wrong with being confident?
What's wrong with being, what's wrong with being
What's wrong with being confident?

So you say I'm complicated
But you've had me underrated

What's wrong with being, what's wrong with being
What's wrong with being confident?
What's wrong with being, what's wrong with being
What's wrong with being confident?
What's wrong with being, what's wrong with being
What's wrong with being confident?
What's wrong with being, what's wrong with being
What's wrong with being confident?
