New Americana - Halsey

The Experience: We are the new Americana... as we face a world filled with challenges of all types we each sense the need for something new and different. The question is, which of the many solutions offered to us actually leads to freedom and not just to another form of slavery.

Music video: We find Halsey living in a bunker on a tropical island surrounded by other young outcasts living the life of the new Americana that the song talks about. She is recognizably their leader and when a band of armed and masked thugs arrive they take her prisoner and lead her to a village where she is tied to a stake for burning. Just as the thugs are about to burn her alive someone throws in a smoke grenade and then all of her followers surge in to save her before they flee together into the hills. The symbolism behind this is powerful. She and her friends are the persecuted minority and she is nearly turned into a Joan of Arc at the stake for the sake of her beliefs. The open question, however, is who exactly do the thugs represent?

The Meaning: Halsey sums up the angst so many of us feel as we look at a culture filled with so many ills ...survival of the richest. And she rightly desires to rise up and build a new order ...the new Americana... that is not defined by wealth and power ...Monaco and Hamptons bound. Yet the solutions Halsey offers do leave one a little dissatisfied. Are these freedoms really the path to a new world order or simply the chains of a new slavery? That said her opening words set a powerful example for those who want to give their lives to make the world a better place for those around them. We are a community. They made me their leader when I never asked to be. But the lightning in their eyes hounded me to be whatever they needed me to become.

Ask yourself: Am I willing to sacrifice myself to build a better world?

LYRICS:

We are a community.
They made me their leader when I never asked to be.
But the lightning in their eyes,
Hounded me to be whatever they needed me to become,
We were hopeful we would win because nothing could scare us.
We feared no city and we feared no man.

Cigarettes and tiny liquor bottles,
Just what you'd expect inside her new Balenciaga.
Vile romance, turned dreams into an empire.
Self-made success now she rolls with Rockefellers.

Survival of the richest, the city's ours until the fall.
They're Monaco and Hamptons bound, but we don't feel like outsiders at all.

We are the new Americana,
High on legal marijuana,
Raised on Biggie and Nirvana,
We are the new Americana.

Young James Dean, some say he looks just like his father,
But he could never love somebody's daughter.
Football team loved more than just the game
So he vowed to be his husband at the altar.

Survival of the richest, the city's ours until the fall.
They're Monaco and Hamptons bound but we don't feel like outsiders at all.

We are the new Americana,
High on legal marijuana,
Raised on Biggie and Nirvana,
We are the new Americana.

We know very well who we are, so we hold it down when summer starts.
What kind of dough have you been spending?
What kind of bubblegum have you been blowing lately?

We are the new Americana,
High on legal marijuana,
Raised on Biggie and Nirvana,
We are the new Americana.
We are the new Americana,
High on legal marijuana,
Raised on Biggie and Nirvana,
We are the new Americana.
Oh oh
