In The Night - The Weeknd

The Experience: I don't think you understand... The Weeknd peers into the tragic pain of life as a victim of abuse who never healed... and offers a fragile dream of hope...

Music video: In The Night revolves around three people: a pimp, a prostitute played by Tesfaye's girlfriend Bella Hadid, and Tesfaye himself. Bella is firmly under the pimp's control, living in fear, locked up with the other girls behind a chain-link fence when they're not at work. But when Tesfaye sits down in the club and watches with compassion and pain in his eyes, something changes. He not an animal like the other men there (note the shots of the alligator the men carry around with them). He doesn't throw his money around. He holds it tightly in hand, waiting for someone to give his love to. That look that crosses the dark brothel between Tesfaye and Bella is the game changer. He's given her worth. The prostitutes all rebel. The kill the clients and guards, and walk out free. In the last scene, the ruined pimp is about to kill Tesfaye - trying to kill true love - but Bella takes him down first. Tesfaye drives off with Bella crying on his shoulder. She's scarred and hurting - the final shot of Bella floating underwater on fire. But she's free and there's a chance that someone's love - the clean rose petal water she's floating in - will put out the flames. The lyrics focus on the power we all have of destroying and scarring others' lives. But the music video showcases the hope that is only hinted at in the lyrics - she's capable of anything - and promises that we also have the power to heal, if we only understand.

The Meaning of In The Night: The Weeknd chronicles the cycle of abuse from a childhood rape - she was young and she was forced to be a woman - to a lonely life - all she had was the city - on the streets as a prostitute. The tragic core of the song is the fact that one heartless crime - he was cold and he was so unforgiving - can scar someone for life - he sang a song when he did it... now she dances to the song on the minute. And the greatest tragedy is that the song - her sense of worthlessness - is who she thinks she is now - she's dancing to relieve the pain... she'll never walk away. She's trapped... unless someone comes to offer her a dream of love and self-worth - she's capable of anything, it's riveting. But even that dream is incredibly fragile - when you wake up she's always gone, gone, gone.

Ask yourself: How can you heal a broken life?

LYRICS:

All alone she was living
In a world without an end or beginning
Baby girl was living life for the feeling
But I don't mind, I don't mind
And all the wrongs she committed
She was numb and she was so co-dependent
She was young and all she had was the city
But I don't mind, I don't mind

And I know that she's capable of anything, it's riveting
But when you wake up she's always gone, gone, gone

In the night she hears them calling
In the night she's dancing to relieve the pain
She'll never walk away (I don't think you understand)
In the night when she comes crawling
Dollar bills and tears keep falling down her face
She'll never walk away (I don't think you understand)

He sang a song when he did it
He was cold and he was so unforgiving
Now she dances to the song on the minute
Yeah, all the time, all the time
It made her weak when she hear it
And it got her on her knees like religion
She was young and she was forced to be a woman
Yeah, all the time, all the time

And I know that she's capable of anything, it's riveting
But when you wake up she's always gone, gone, gone

In the night she hears them calling
In the night she's dancing to relieve the pain
She'll never walk away (I don't think you understand)
In the night when she comes crawling
Dollar bills and tears keep falling down her face
She'll never walk away (I don't think you understand)

I don't think you understand...

In the night she hears them calling
In the night she's dancing to relieve the pain
She'll never walk away (I don't think you understand)
In the night when she comes crawling
Dollar bills and tears keep falling down her face
She'll never walk away (I don't think you understand)
