Hypnotic - Zella Day

The Experience: Magnetic everything about you. You really got me now. You do it to me so well,  hypnotic takin' over me... Evil can be very tempting. And that's why we sometimes embrace what hurts us, and can't let go of what will kill us...

Music video: Zella Day's car breaks down in an empty desert - that desolate setting is key, since temptation is strongest when we're alone with nothing good to grab onto. When the smoke from her engine clears, she's confronted with a hot but brooding man on a white horse - later shown to be the devil or at least possessed when his eyes go totally white. Her first reaction is a good one: caution. She puts defensively puts on her coat before confronting him. But once she dallies - caressing the horse - the coat ends up on the desert floor and she lets him swing her up into the saddle. Next scene - he carries her unconscious body into a tent. From then on the focus is on temptation itself - almost impossible to resist when you've already let your guard down. Disorientation: the dizzying black and white patterns. Seduction: the backseat. Domination: he's portrayed as imposing, towering over her as she cowers. Poison: the snake that accompanies him and finally ends up around her neck like a noose. It's an interplay of revulsion and attraction as she lets herself become more and more hypnotized. The outcome: Hypnotic ends with a sudden cut to her buried up to her neck in the sand as the snake slithers back to its master. She's still out of it, but the heat of the rising sun will soon hammer home her mistake. Temptation kills when you get too close.

The music video reaches the right conclusions, but has one big drawback: its focus on the attraction of evil is too hypnotic. Zella Day paints a picture of temptation as practically irresistible. And she doesn't give you any out. You will fall, at it will kill you. Dark.

The Meaning of Hypnotic: The song delves into the experience of temptation, and the reason why we fall, why we go places we didn't want to and do things we vowed we never would. Giving into temptation doesn't make it better. It's like drinking from dirty shallow water. But it's tempting and so hard to resist. That's the experience that Zella Day explores in Hypnotic. Sin hurts you. The pure innocent lace on your white dress get ruined when you go through that door - white threads on my laces stuck on the hinges. The exhilarating rush of just giving in, it lacerates you - got splinters walkin' tightropes. You feel like someone else but what's really happening is temptation is takin' over. Zella Day's masterfully makes you feel all that... but there's

Ask yourself: Do you take off the coat? Do you let your defenses down and doom yourself to taking the fall?

LYRICS:

(Ahh ahh)

I wanna be on the front line
Knotted up suit ties
Talkin' like a headstrong mama
Gotta picture in your wallet
Makin' me a habit
Wearin' your vintage t-shirt
Tie ribbons on ya top hat
Tellin' me I'm all that
Just like the girls from ya home town
Sweet blooded and I'm stranded
See if I can stand it
Drinkin' in the shallow water

Magnetic everything about you
You really got me now

You do it to me so well
Hypnotic takin' over me
Make me feel like someone else
You got me talkin' in my sleep
I don't wanna come back down
I don't wanna touch the ground
Pacific ocean dug so deep
Hypnotic takin' over me

(Ahh ahh)

White threads on my laces
Stuck on the hinges
Swingin' the door to the to the back yard
Got splinters walkin' tight ropes
Spun like a bandage
Touch on the outer surface
Bright eyes of the solstice
Wherever your mind is headed for a freight train city
Locked up till your moon lit
Brushin' my hair back
Feelin' ya lips on my cold neck

Magnetic everything about you
You really got me now

You do it to me so well
Hypnotic takin' over me
Make me feel like someone else
You got me talkin' in my sleep
I don't wanna come back down
I don't wanna touch the ground
Pacific ocean dug so deep
Hypnotic takin' over me

(Ahh)

Hypnotic takin' over me

You do it to me so well
Hypnotic takin' over me
Make me feel like someone else
You got me talkin' in my sleep
I don't wanna come back down
I don't wanna touch the ground
Pacific ocean dug so deep
Hypnotic takin' over me

(Ahh)

Hypnotic takin' over me

(Ahh)

Hypnotic takin' over me

(Ahh ahh)
