Out of The Woods - Taylor Swift

The Experience: She lost him. She lost him but she found herself and somehow that was everything... Knowing yourself comes before giving yourself away. But the process hurts...

Music video: The video settles the open question the lyrics left us with - are we out of the woods? The answer is double. They didn't. But she did. The video starts with an ingenuous Taylor Swift standing on the beach staring into the open sea of her dreams. Through the thorns, the wolves, the fall, the water, the desert heat, the sharp ice, the avalanche, and the mud... she suffers her way through the failure and the break up. And she finds herself. A wiser Taylor returns to her innocent self on the beach scratched and bruised, but unbroken.

One element hints that she even toys with rejecting love altogether. The shot of her enmeshed in vines with her right arm in the air is reminiscent of the Greek nymph Daphne who turns herself into a tree rather than accept Apollo's bold come on. But the vines retract, and Taylor stays human.

The Meaning of Out of The Woods: The song seems to follow Taylor Swift and her boyfriend through good times - lying on your couch... we could dance - and bad - we were built to fall apart... twenty stitches in the hospital room. But in the end you're not quite sure if they break up - two airplanes flying apart - or manage to make it out of the woods - the monsters turned out to be just trees
And when the sun came up, you were lookin' at me. What is clear is that this relationship is an intimate and essential part of who they are - you took a Polaroid of us... the rest of the world was black and white but we were in screaming color.

Ask yourself: You can't give yourself to someone until you know who you are. Who are you?

LYRICS:

Looking at it now
It all seems so simple
We were lying on your couch
I remember
You took a Polaroid of us
Then discovered (then discovered)
The rest of the world was black and white
But we were in screaming color
And I remember thinking…

Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods?
Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet?
In the clear yet?
Good

Are we out of the woods?

Looking at it now
Last December (last December)
We were built to fall apart
Then fall back together (back together)
Your necklace hanging from my neck
The night we couldn't quite forget
When we decided (we decided)
To move the furniture so we could dance,
Baby, like we stood a chance
Two paper airplanes flying, flying, flying
And I remember thinkin'

Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods?
Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet?
In the clear yet?
Good

(Are we out of the woods?!)

Remember when you hit the brakes too soon?
Twenty stitches in the hospital room
When you started cryin', baby, I did, too
But when the sun came up, I was lookin' at you
Remember when we couldn't take the heat
I walked out and said, "I'm settin' you free,"
But the monsters turned out to be just trees
And when the sun came up, you were lookin' at me
You were lookin' at me
You were lookin' at me,
I remember, oh, I remember

Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods?
Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet?
In the clear yet?
Good
