Piece By Piece - Kelly Clarkson

The Experience: And all I remember is your back walking towards the airport, leaving us all in your past. I traveled fifteen hundred miles to see you, begged you to want me, but you didn't want to. But piece by piece, he collected me... so I can feel alive... A father abandoned her but a husband restored her faith...

Music video: A gray color scheme underlines the sad backdrop of a song about the failures and greatness of fatherhood. But at the same time, that lack of color both softens the bad, and brings out the inner emotion in each face, whether they're dealing with abandonment or rejoicing at being found and cherished.

The Meaning of Piece By Piece: A father can make or break his children. And according to Kelly Clarkson, the powerful emotions that charge Piece By Piece are her own. The hurt - her father walked out on her at six years old - and the joy of being loved, cherished and healed piece by piece when she found her husband Brandon Blackstock. For Kelly, Piece By Piece started to come together when she held her daughter River for the first time: I had River, and even from holding her the first day, I was like, how could anyone walk away from that? Then I started thinking that my husband is such a great father [...] I was talking to my sister on the phone about how sometimes girls with daddy issues don’t find men like that! You find men who are all you knew, and I just feel so lucky. Maybe it’s because I waited and worked through my 20s. It’s a positive song, even though I know it sounds sad. I don’t know what my father went through as a child, and I don’t know why he left and made the decisions he made, but everyone’s human. I don’t understand it for me, but I understand the depth of what that is—having a child—now, and he’s made me want to be that much more present in my family. Full interview here

Ask yourself: Have you been on the giving or receiving side of abandonment? Are you there for someone? Is someone there for you?

LYRICS:

And all I remember is your back
Walking towards the airport, leaving us all in your past
I traveled fifteen hundred miles to see you
Begged you to want me, but you didn't want to

But piece by piece, he collected me
Up off the ground, where you abandoned things, yeah
Piece by piece he filled the holes that you burned in me
At six years old and you know, he never walks away
He never asks for money, he takes care of me
He loves me
Piece by piece, he restored my faith
That a man can be kind and a father could... stay

And all of your words fall flat
I made something of myself and now you want to come back
But your love, it isn't free, it has to be earned
Back then I didn't have anything you needed so I was worthless

But piece by piece, he collected me
Up off the ground, where you abandoned things, yeah
Piece by piece he filled the holes that you burned in me
At six years old and you know, he never walks away
He never asks for money, he takes care of me
He loves me
Piece by piece, he restored my faith
That a man can be kind and a father could... stay

Piece by piece [x6]

Piece by piece I fell far from the tree
I will never leave her like you left me
And she will never have to wonder her worth
Because unlike you I'm going to put her first
And you know, he'll never walk away,
He'll never break her heart
He'll take care of things, he'll love her
And piece by piece, he'll restore my faith
That a man can be kind and a father should be great

Piece by piece [x3]
