Heathens - Twenty One Pilots

The Experience: I was told when I get older all my fears would shrink, but now I'm insecure and I care what people think... Do your dreams have to shrink as you grow...

Music video: Twenty One Pilots pull heavily from the Suicide Squad imagery Heathens was written to accompany. They walk the prison, and go back and forth between belonging behind bars or walking free... until the final scene leaves no doubt that Tyler Joseph is a very dangerous man.

The Meaning of Heathens: Independently of Suicide Squad, Heathens explores the fact that none of us are innocent. If it's true that all the people docked away have people they loved one day, there's also a reason there's a freakshow, a murderer, and a psychopath sitting next to you: you belong here. It looks like you might be one of us. That's not the whole truth about you... but it is part of who you are, even if it's not who you're doomed to be. That said, Heathens adds a healthy dose of despair: just because we check the guns at the door - just because we try to change - doesn't mean our brains will change from hand grenades.

Ask yourself: Do you recognize the devil on your shoulder? Or do you think that you're a perfect angel with no risk of falling?

LYRICS:

All my friends are heathens. Take it slow
Wait for them to ask you who you know
Please don't make any sudden moves
You don't know the half of the abuse
[2x]

Welcome to the room of people
Who have rooms of people that they loved one day
Docked away
Just because we check the guns at the door
Doesn't mean our brains will change from hand grenades

You'll never know the psychopath sitting next to you
You'll never know the murderer sitting next to you
You'll think, "How'd I get here, sitting next to you?"
But after all I've said
Please don't forget

All my friends are heathens. Take it slow
Wait for them to ask you who you know
Please don't make any sudden moves
You don't know the half of the abuse

We don't deal with outsiders very well
They say newcomers have a certain smell
You have trust issues, not to mention
They say they can smell your intentions

You'll never know the freakshow sitting next to you
You'll have some weird people sitting next to you
You'll think, "How did I get here, sitting next to you?"
But after all I've said
Please don't forget
(watch it, watch it)

All my friends are heathens. Take it slow
Wait for them to ask you who you know
Please don't make any sudden moves
You don't know the half of the abuse

All my friends are heathens. Take it slow
(watch it)
Wait for them to ask you who you know
(watch it)
Please, all my friends are heathens. Take it slow
(watch it)
Wait for them to ask you who you know

Why'd you come, you knew you should have stayed
(it's blasphemy)
I tried to warn you just to stay away
And now they're outside ready to bust
It looks like you might be one of us
