Vice - Miranda Lambert

The Experience: Don't know where I am or how I got here. Well the only thing that I know how to find is another vice... When you hate yourself you can either change, or spend the rest of your life going from vice to vice trying to forget why you want to forget who you are...

Music video: Miranda Lambert regains consciousness lying in the wreckage of an overturned car. She drags herself out the back window and heads back into town where the newspaper is all about her - the front page news is "CHAOS". The leather jacket is her most recent failure at fleeing from her past misdeeds - I'll wear a town like a leather jacket, when the new wears off, I don't even pack it. The car was her latest vice. It left her wrecked in the opening scene, and stops at the empty crossroads to take her away as the video ends. Both times there's no driver - no control. And both times she's in the backseat - a helpless victim by choice.

The Meaning of Vice: Alcohol - sweet salvation on a dining room table... it's gone before it ever melts the ice. Sex - another bed I shouldn't crawl out of. Miranda Lambert sings the song of a woman who has lost her way. She doesn't want to face herself - standing at the sink not looking at the mirror don't know who I am. (That's a veiled reference to her previous song Bathroom Sink in which the bathroom mirror is where you see your soul at the end of every day.) She's just looking for another vice to get her through the next day. That's despair.

Ask yourself: Am I on a quest for happiness? Or do I wander from vice to vice looking to forget who I've become?

LYRICS:

Sting of the needle dropping on a vinyl
Neon singer with a jukebox title full of heartbreak
33, 45, 78
When it hurts this good you gotta play it twice
Another vice

All dressed up in a pretty black label
Sweet salvation on a dining room table
Waiting on me
Where the numb meets the lonely

It's gone before it ever melts the ice
Another vice

Another call, another bed I shouldn't crawl out of
At 7 AM with shoes in my hand
Said I wouldn't do it, but I did it again
And I know I'll be back tomorrow night, oh

I'll wear a town like a leather jacket
When the new wears off, I don't even pack it
If you need me
I'll be where my reputation don't precede me

Maybe I'm addicted to goodbyes
Another vice

Another town, where my past can't run me down
Another life, another call, another bed I shouldn't crawl out of
At 7AM with shoes in my hand
Said I wouldn't do it, but I did it again
And I know I'll be gone tomorrow night
Mmm, another vice

Standing at the sink not looking in the mirror
Don't know where I am or how I got here
Well the only thing that I know how to find
Is another vice

Mmm another vice
Yes, another vice
Ooh, another vice
Another vice
Another vice
Another vice
