How Did You Love - Shinedown

The Experience: No one gets out alive... Death is the ultimate equalizer. What's left when everything you have is stripped away?

Music video: A girl discovers that her house is a set. She breaks through wall after wall of an elaborate stage: her house, a church with a funeral going on (but the dead man is an actor - he opens his eyes), a false lake lite by an electric moon on a chain, a faux city, the darkness of backstage. When she finally finds the exit, she pushes out through green sod onto the tombstone of English poet Francis Thompson (1859-1907. The message seems to be death is the only reality - she finally relaxes back onto the grave as the video ends. But Francis Thompson's most famous poem The Hound of Heaven is about God pursuing the human soul to save it. And the real life words on Francis Thompson's tombstone in Kensal Green, England are "Look for me in the nurseries of Heaven". Coincidence? Or hope?

The Meaning of How Did You Love: Shinedown offers and enigmatic reminder that life is short. The truth will always come out - with a million lies the truth will rise to tear you apart. No one can answer for you - you can't replicate or duplicate, gotta find your own way. And although Shinedown seems skeptical of religion, or at least of insincere versions - it's not what you believe, those prayers will make you bleed - they do insist that your choices matter: but while you're on your knees, how did you love?

Ask yourself: How do you get from the cradle to the grave without losing your way? Does it matter?

Album: Threat to Survival (2015)

LYRICS:

[Music video voiceover: Oh for muse of truth that we could descend into the darkest hells of our own inventions. A kingdom, a stage, a cage.]

You can have the sound of a thousand voices calling your name.
You can have the light of the world blind you, bathe you in grace.
But I don't see so easily what you hold in your hands.
Cause castles crumble, kingdoms fall and turn into sand.

You can be an angel of mercy or give into hate.
You can try to buy it just like it every other careless mistake.
How do you justify I'm mystified by the ways of your heart.
With a million lies the truth will rise to tear you apart.
Wooaahh!

No one gets out alive, every day is do or die.
The one thing you leave behind.
Is how did you love, how did you love?
It's not what you believe; those prayers will make you bleed.
But while you're on your knees.
How did you love, how did you love, how did you love?

Nothing ever feels quite the same when you are what you dreamed.
And you will never look at anything the same when you see what I see
How we forget ourselves, lose our way from the cradle to the grave
You can't replicate or duplicate, gotta find your own way. Yeahhhh!

No one gets out alive, every day is do or die.
The one thing you leave behind.
Is how did you love, how did you love?
It's not what you believe; those prayers will make you bleed.
But while you're on your knees.
How did you love, how did you love, how did you love?

This ain't no cross to carry.
We are the judge and jury; we are the judge and jury.

No one gets out alive, every day is do or die.
The one thing you leave behind.
Is how did you love, how did you love?
It's not what you believe; those prayers will make you bleed.
But while you're on your knees.

How did you love, how did you love, how did you love?

This ain't no cross to carry
We are the judge and jury, we are the judge and jury

How did you love, how did you love?
How did you love, how did you love?
