How Far I'll Go - Alessia Cara

The Experience: Everybody on this island seems so happy... but I come back to the water no matter how hard I try... Inside of everyone there's a deep desire for more...

Music video: Alessia Cara sings How Far I'll Go, perched on the shore where "real life" meets the depths of our dreams.

The Meaning of How Far I'll Go: Alessia Cara sings Moana's song. On the Disney side of things it's the flip side to Belle's song in Beauty and the Beast. Belle is about how the town is too small. How Far I'll Go is about the depth and the beauty and the greatness of what's out there to be discovered - no one knows how far it goes. On the Alessia Cara side, How Far I'll Go is a perfect companion to Here. The disgust with her world is part of the yearning she feels for something more. What's bad isn't worth it. What's good isn't enough. She wants more that her world has to offer. We all do. Some people bury it - everybody on this island has a role - because accepting that yearning is painful. It's hard to be called somewhere you can't go - every turn I take, every trail I track, every path I make, every road leads back to the place I know, where I can not go, though I long to. But if you don't kill it, if you follow it, there's no telling how far you'll go into the beauty of that dream. We're made for the line where the sea meets the sky.

Ask yourself: What do you yearn for?

Soundtrack: Moana (2016)

LYRICS:

I've been standing at the edge of the water
'Long as I can remember, never really knowing why
I wish I could be the perfect daughter
But I come back to the water, no matter how hard I try

Every turn I take, every trail I track
Every path I make, every road leads back
To the place I know, where I can not go
Though I long to be

See the line where the sky meets the sea? It calls me
And no one knows, how far it goes
If the wind in my sail on the sea stays behind me
One day I'll know, if I go there's just no telling how far I'll go

Oh oh oh, oh, oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh, oh oh
Oh oh oh, oh, oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh, oh oh

I know, everybody on this island seems so happy on this island
Everything is by design
I know, everybody on this island has a role on this island
So maybe I can roll with mine

I can lead with pride, I can make us strong
I'll be satisfied if I play along
But the voice inside sings a different song
What is wrong with me?

See the light as it shines on the sea? It's blinding
But no one knows, how deep it goes
And it seems like it's calling out to me, so come find me
And let me know, what's beyond that line, will I cross that line?

See the line where the sky meets the sea? It calls me
And no one knows, how far it goes
If the wind in my sail on the sea stays behind me
One day I'll know, how far I'll go
