Million Reasons - Lady Gaga

The Experience: Every heartbreak makes it hard to keep the faith. But baby, I just need one good one [reason]... When I bow down to pray I try to make the worse seem better. Lord, show me the way... When your heart is broken, and with it every single thing you lived for, faith is all you have left. Because there is still someone to pray to...

Music video: Million Reasons picks up right where Perfect Illusion left off: Lady Gaga lying in the desert empty, abandoned and heartbroken. But that's not the end of the line. In the desert, Lady Gaga's friends find her and bring her back. And backstage, her sister sends her a gift to help her through the heartbreak: a rosary so she can pray her way through the pain.

The Meaning of Million Reasons: Perfect Illusion started off about Lady Gaga's ex-fiancé Taylor Kinney, but quickly moved to something much deeper: existential breakdown that left Lady Gaga lying abandoned in and empty desert, even in the midst of fame and fandom. Millions Reasons picks up as Lady Gaga asks God, from the middle of that disappointment and emptiness, for just one reason to stay. Staying isn't just about the relationship - the show she's thinking of quitting is life itself. When you're that alone and that heartbroken, is there a reason to keep on living? Lady G is clearly praying for that one reason to exist - I bow down to pray. But it's not clear whether that's just a coping mechanism - I try to make the worse seem better - or a real conversation with a real someone - Lord show me the way The lyrics don't quite find the hope that the music video offers.

Ask yourself: Is there someone to pray to? Or does heartbreak make it too hard to keep the faith?

Album: Joanne (2016)

LYRICS:

You're giving me a million reasons to let you go
You're giving me a million reasons to quit the show
You're givin' me a million reasons
Give me a million reasons
Givin' me a million reasons
About a million reasons

If I had a highway, I would run for the hills
If you could find a dry way, I'd forever be still
But you're giving me a million reasons
Give me a million reasons
Givin' me a million reasons
About a million reasons

I bow down to pray
I try to make the worse seem better
Lord, show me the way
To cut through all his worn out leather
I've got a hundred million reasons to walk away
But baby, I just need one good one to stay

Head stuck in a cycle, I look off and I stare
It's like that I've stopped breathing, but completely aware
'Cause you've given me a million reasons
Give me a million reasons
Giving me a million reasons
About a million reasons

And if you say something that you might even mean
It's hard to even fathom which parts I should believe
'Cause you've given me a million reasons
Give me a million reasons
Givin' me a million reasons
About a million reasons

I bow down to pray
I try to make the worse seem better
Lord, show me the way
To cut through all his worn out leather
I've got a hundred million reasons to walk away
But baby, I just need one good one to stay

Aye-eee-ayeee-ay-ayyee
Oh, baby I'm bleedin', bleedin'
Aye-eee-ayeee-ay-ayyee
Can't you give me what I'm needin', needin'
Every heartbreak makes it hard to keep the faith
But baby, I just need one good one
Good one, good one, good one, good one, good one

When I bow down to pray
I try to make the worse seem better
Lord, show me the way
To cut through all his worn out leather

I've got a hundred million reasons to walk away
But baby, I just need one good one, good one
Tell me that you'll be the good one, good one
Baby, I just need one good one to stay aye eee ayeee
