Chained To The Rhythm - Katy Perry ft. Skip Marley

The Experience: We think we're free... That moment when you realize that your likes, tastes, dreams and loves aren't original, that you're a pawn. That moment when you want to dream your own dreams, instead of someone else's...

Music video: The lyric video follows hands that prepare a scrumptious mini meal for a captive hamster in a dollhouse. The hamster is passive and clueless. The real protagonist is his captor/owner, in total control.

The music video follows Katy Perry as she loses herself in a hamster-themed amusement park named Oblivia (Latin for forgetfulness). Peoples fortunes go up and down at the whim of a machine in The American Dream Drop. Random couples are tossed and turned on the Love Me roller coaster. And people line up for hours (1984 hours, just like Orson Wells novel about life under a totalitarian big brother regime) to ride The Greatest Ride in the Universe. , which turns out to be a hamster wheel. Although Katy Perry's character identifies with Skip Marley's dream of breaking free, the music video ends with her stuck in a standstill on The Greatest Ride in the Universe, which turns out to be a hamster wheel - endless running with nowhere to go.

The Meaning of Chained To The Rhythm: Although the song doesn't specify the identify of the liars who sit up in your high place, it's a powerful and sarcastic rant against the rhythms - the rose-colored glasses and white picket fences and bubbles and favorite songs - that keep us lonely, unhappy and with nowhere to go. And a lament for those who can't break free.

Ask yourself: When society itself is full of walls, how do you wake up? How do you doff the comfort and riot for something better than the false and feeble truths of what's politically correct?

LYRICS:

[Katy Perry]
Are we crazy?
Living our lives through a lens
Trapped in our white picket fence
Like ornaments
So comfortable, we're living in a bubble, bubble
So comfortable, we cannot see the trouble, trouble
Aren't you lonely?
Up there in utopia
Where nothing will ever be enough
Happily numb
So comfortable, we're living in a bubble, bubble
So comfortable, we cannot see the trouble, trouble

(Aha)
So put your rose-colored glasses on
And party on

Turn it up, it's your favorite song
Dance, dance, dance to the distortion

Turn it up, keep it on repeat
Stumbling around like a wasted zombie, yeah
We think we're free (Aha)
Drink, this one's on me
We're all chained to the rhythm
To the rhythm
To the rhythm
Turn it up, it's your favorite song
Dance, dance, dance to the distortion
Turn it up, keep it on repeat
Stumbling around like a wasted zombie, yeah
We think we're free (Aha)
Drink, this one's on me
We're all chained to the rhythm
To the rhythm
To the rhythm

Are we tone deaf?
Keep sweeping it under the mat
Thought we could do better than that
I hope we can
So comfortable, we're living in a bubble, bubble
So comfortable, we cannot see the trouble, trouble

(Aha)
So put your rose-colored glasses on
And party on

Turn it up, it's your favorite song
Dance, dance, dance to the distortion
Turn it up, keep it on repeat
Stumbling around like a wasted zombie, yeah
We think we're free (Aha)
Drink, this one's on me
We're all chained to the rhythm
To the rhythm
To the rhythm

Turn it up, it's your favorite song
Dance, dance, dance to the distortion
Turn it up, keep it on repeat
Stumbling around like a wasted zombie, yeah
We think we're free (Aha)
Drink, this one's on me
We're all chained to the rhythm
To the rhythm
To the rhythm

[Skip Marley]
It is my desire
Break down the walls to connect, inspire, ay
Up in your high place, liars
Time is ticking for the empire
The truth they feed is feeble
As so many times before
They greed over the people
They stumbling and fumbling
And we about to riot
They woke up, they woke up the lions
(Woo!)

[Katy Perry]
Turn it up, it's your favorite song
Dance, dance, dance to the distortion
Turn it up (turn it up, turn it up), keep it on repeat
Stumbling around like a wasted zombie (like a wasted zombie), yeah
We think we're free (Aha)
Drink, this one's on me
We're all chained to the rhythm
To the rhythm
To the rhythm

It goes on and on and on
It goes on and on and on
It goes on and on and on
'Cause we're all chained to the rhythm
