Issues - Julia Michaels

The Experience: 'Cause I got issues but you got 'em too... We got the type of love it takes to solve 'em... I love them but I have issues. They love me but they have issues. Being in love doesn't mean being perfect...

Music video: The music video focuses on him and her as the two poles of a relationship that's not easy, but still deep, still real, still worth living. The lyric video takes a look at people with no loves: a mother trying to drawn the loss of her daughter in alcohol, a composer who can't make his song work, a lonely African American boy with only music to keep him company, a man cross dressing in front of the mirror. Alongside those examples of loneliness there are also two couples - one gay and one lesbian - who fight and make up. Those two couples, and the fact that the only other option presented is loneliness, give the video a heavy LGBT bias which completely alters the feel of the song. The lyrics say that commitment can bring love out of struggles. But the lyric video says if you're not gay you're probably very lonely.

The Meaning of Issues: Independent of the material and themes that the lyric video adds, the lyrics themselves celebrate the type of love that can persevere through mistakes on both sides. That doesn't mean the issues aren't real. It just means that the memory of each one becomes the memory, not just of a problem, but of the solution, of growth, of love that was stronger

Ask yourself: What type of love does it take to solve your issues? Which relationships offer the best chance of solving their problems and providing lasting love? The type of love the music video offers, or the different LGBT situations the lyric video showcases?

LYRICS:

I'm jealous, I'm overzealous
When I'm down, I get real down
When I'm high, I don't come down
I get angry, baby, believe me
I could love you just like that
And I could leave you just as fast

But you don't judge me
'Cause if you did, baby, I would judge you too
No, you don't judge me
'Cause if you did, baby, I would judge you too

'Cause I got issues
But you got 'em too
So give 'em all to me
And I'll give mine to you
Bask in the glory
Of all our problems
'Cause we got the kind of love
It takes to solve 'em

Yeah, I got issues
And one of them is how bad I need you

You do sh-t on purpose
You get mad and you break things
Feel bad, try to fix things
But you're perfect
Poorly wired circuit
And got hands like an ocean
Push you out, pull you back in

'Cause you don't judge me
'Cause if you did, baby, I would judge you too
No, you don't judge me
'Cause you see it from the same point of view

'Cause I got issues
But you got 'em too
So give 'em all to me
And I'll give mine to you
Bask in the glory
Of all our problems
'Cause we got the kind of love
It takes to solve 'em

Yeah, I got issues
And one of them is how bad I need you

(I got issues, you got 'em too)
And one of them is how bad I need you
(I got issues, you got 'em too)

'Cause I got issues
(I got)
But you got 'em too
So give 'em all to me
(You got 'em too)
And I'll give mine to you
Bask in the glory
(I got issues)
Of all our problems
'Cause we got the kind of love
(You got 'em too)
It takes to solve 'em

Yeah, I got issues (I got)
And one of them is how bad I need you (You got 'em too)
Yeah, I got issues (I got issues)
And one of them is how bad I need you (You got 'em too)
Yeah, I got issues (I got)
And one of them is how bad I need you
