Look What You Made Me Do - Taylor Swift

The Experience: All I think about is karma... The worst thing that can happen isn't the hurt. It's that hurt defining who and what you are...

Music video: Just like the lyrics, music video shows Taylor stuck in a roundabout. But this time it's not betrayal and revenge. Instead, it's Taylor itself as she stumbles through the long iteration of all her past looks and personae. They're all tools she's used, like the army of robots in the U team shot. But none of them is her. And that's why her reputation is dead - there's no real Taylor to judge. It's all a show. The video leaves us with questions: who is Taylor Swift? Who are any of us? Does anyone really know us? Do we know ourselves?

The Meaning of Look What You Made Me Do: The song cycles through three different feels. 1st, the verses: how Taylor was hurt.  2nd, the first half of the refrain: but I got better, I got harder - a will and strength to fight back. 3rd, the second half of the refrain: ooh, look what you made me do - it reveals the cracks in that strength. In the end, Taylor is still a victim. The crimes committed against her are what define her fight - all I think about is karma. The world might move on, but Taylor is stuck in a cycle of hurt and revenge - the downward spiral of a snake biting it's own tail, hurting itself more and more and over and over. The old Taylor is dead, the new Taylor is an eternal victim of that crime, and the song ends by hammering that tragedy home sixteen times: look what you made me do, look what you just made me do...

Ask yourself: Can someone hurt you so badly that they mark the rest of your life?

Album: Reputation (2017)

LYRICS:

I don't like your little games
Don't like your tilted stage
The role you made me play
Of the fool, no, I don't like you
I don't like your perfect crime
How you laugh when you lie
You said the gun was mine
Isn't cool, no, I don't like you (oh!)

But I got smarter, I got harder in the nick of time
Honey, I rose up from the dead, I do it all the time
I've got a list of names and yours is in red, underlined
I check it once, then I check it twice, oh!

Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me
Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me do

I don't like your kingdom keys
They once belonged to me
You asked me for a place to sleep
Locked me out and threw a feast (what?)
The world moves on, another day, another drama, drama
But not for me, not for me, all I think about is karma
And then the world moves on, but one thing's for sure
Maybe I got mine, but you'll all get yours

But I got smarter, I got harder in the nick of time
Honey, I rose up from the dead, I do it all the time
I've got a list of names and yours is in red, underlined
I check it once, then I check it twice, oh!

Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me
Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me do

I don't trust nobody and nobody trusts me
I'll be the actress starring in your bad dreams
I don't trust nobody and nobody trusts me
I'll be the actress starring in your bad dreams
I don't trust nobody and nobody trusts me
I'll be the actress starring in your bad dreams
I don't trust nobody and nobody trusts me
I'll be the actress starring in your bad dreams

(Look what you made me do)
(Look what you made me do)
(Look what you just made me do)
(Look what you made me do)
"I'm sorry, the old Taylor can't come to the phone right now."
"Why?"
"Oh, 'cause she's dead!" (ohh!)

Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me
Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me do

Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me
Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me do
