Next To Me - Imagine Dragons

The Experience: Can anyone truly be forgiven? The answer is in the loved ones who stay at my side even when we shatter their lives, and in the God who's still next to me to forgive even the things they can't...

Music video: Can anyone be truly forgiven? Reynold cheats on his wife Aja, then goes of the deep end when she leaves him, kills a man and ends up in a cell. Somewhere there in the darkness he repents and asks for the forgiveness he knows he can't earn. That sets his soul free. But it still doesn't erase the evil he did or the death penalty he deserves. The video is a testimony to the freedom that repentance brings... but only if there is more than this life. In the video his wife forgives him far too late to save him. The salvation Dan Reynolds sings for is something else. Something more impossible. Something to hope for only if in the end, after we've paid as much as we can of our unpayable debt, someone can still grant us the forgiveness we don't deserve, and let us know we're still alive.

The Meaning of Next To Me: The songs charts a completely unfair relationship. We fail. We betray. We always let you down. And still you want me. Forgiveness and fidelity meet wretchedness. We just hope and somehow hope to be worth it... That's the bittersweet reality of some relationships: beauty on one end and the tragedy on the other. And deep down that's our truth. We fail. We betray. We always let you down. But somehow God is always there next to us. Somehow that fidelity gives us the worth we can't earn for ourselves.

Ask yourself: Are your relationships deep enough to affect who you are?

MUSIC VIDEO:

[Aja]
Dear Reynold, my heart is broken
It's so badly broken that I fear it will never be whole again
I'm leaving you
All the promises you made
All the love we had
Destroyed
Maybe you never meant it
Maybe you knew all along you would just string me along for all these years
You are not the man I thought you were
You never were
I believed what we had was sacred
You just gave it away
All of it
Lyin', cheatin', failure
I will erase you from my heart from my mind
I will wash you away and I will never look back
You chose this
You decided that I wasn't enough
And that was it
I am enough for someone
Just not you
Goodbye, Aja

"Nope, it's two hundred. Two hundred"
"Give it back"

[Reynold]
We spend our life thinking about the mistakes
things we wish we could take back
if I could I would take them back
I would burn them
I beg you to never know me

"Give me everything you've got"
"Just take it easy"

To forget every wrong thing I ever did
I ever said

"Just take it easy"

Forgive me for what I've done

I'm sitting in the darkness and I know they're coming for me
The sky's open and the ghost came back
These are the witnesses, the ones who know all my sins
Where I've been
The past and the present
They take the forms of those forgotten, unknown, never allowed
I failed all of you
I let you all die
I let you go
Part of me is next to me

"See you around, Tony"
"Good luck, kid"

Today is the day I get to go home to you
All of the journey from the travelling road
to the strange sidings
the visions of beauty
the odd disruptions
They're all for you
for your power and love
holding me
next to me

My dearest, I failed you
I failed us
I'm sorry

"Tony!"

I'm so sorry
Love, Reynold

"Aggghhh!"

[Aja]
We ask for forgiveness
From ourself
From the monster we can't see
Can anyone be truly forgiven?
Potential fate
My history
The ending of destiny
The possibility of life without love

[Reynold]
Hold me forever
Touch me now before i go
Let me know I'm alive
Let me know I'm alive

LYRICS:

Something about the way that you walked into my living room
Casually and confident lookin' at the mess I am
But still you, still you want me
Stress lines and cigarettes, politics and deficits
Late bills and overages, screamin' and hollerin'
But still you, still you want me

Oh, I always let you down
You're shattered on the ground
But still I find you there
Next to me
And oh, stupid things I do
I'm far from good, it's true
But still I find you
Next to me

There's something about the way that you always see the pretty view
Overlook the blooded mess, always lookin' effortless
And still you, still you want me
I got no innocence, faith ain't no privilege
I am a deck of cards, vice or a game of hearts
And still you, still you want me

Oh, I always let you down
You're shattered on the ground
But still I find you there
Next to me
And oh, stupid things I do
I'm far from good, it's true
But still I find you
Next to me

So thank you for taking a chance on me
I know it isn't easy
But I hope to be worth it
So thank you for taking a chance on me
I know it isn't easy
But I hope to be worth it

Oh, I always let you down (I always let you down)
You're shattered on the ground (shattered on the ground)
But still I find you there
Next to me
And oh, stupid things I do (stupid things I do)
I'm far from good, it's true
But still I find you
Next to me (next to me)
