Chun-Li - Nicki Minaj

The Experience: She really is the best... we all yearn for love and recognition. But what does that actually look like? And what price do we pay to get it...

Music video: Nicki Minaj lures her ex's assassins and uniformed henchmen into a trap, dances for them - although it's more about her dominance than about them - and kills them. The ambiance is Asian to match the Street Fighter reference and the lyrics, but the music video doesn't build any more bridges to the values of Chun-Li's backstory than the lyrics do.

The Meaning of Chun-Li: The title references Street Fighter's first female protagonist, a young martial artist whose story includes battle prowess, a fierce sense of justice and dedication to the weak and oppressed. That's a promising title hinting at an anthem to female empowerment. But the lyrics themselves aim much lower. The woman Nicki Minaj describes vaunts other "virtues": flashy wealth, high fashion, luxury cars, graphic sexuality, and total control of every relationship. The safety that control seems to offer is attractive, but power and control are means not goals. Chun-Li's end game doesn't seem to live up to its Street Fighter namesake.

Ask yourself: What makes for a truly empowered woman?

LYRICS:

[Music video: I knew you'd come. Somehow I just knew you'd find me. Not knowing where I was or when I was coming back sent you crazy. I kept my spies on you though. I didn't like what they reported back. Thought you were smarter than that. You had to have known this was strategically designed architecture. Architecture that only I have the pinkprint for. And nevertheless... you took the bait.]

Ayo, look like I'm goin' for a swim
Dunk on 'em, now I'm swingin' off the rim
B-tch ain't comin' off the bench
While I'm comin' off the court fully drenched
Here, get some haterade, get ya thirst quenched
Styled on 'em in this Burberry trench
These birds copy every word, every inch
But gang gang got the hammer and the wrench (brrr)
I pull up in that quarter milli off the lot
Oh, now she tryna be friends like I forgot
Show off my diamonds like I'm signed by the Roc
Ain't pushin' out his babies 'til he buy the rock

Ayo, I been on, b-tch, you been conned
Bentley tints on, Fendi prints on
I mean I been Storm, X-Men been formed
He keep on dialin' Nicki like the Prince song
I-I-I been on, b-tch, you been conned
Bentley tints on, Fendi prints on
Ayo, I been off, Lara been Croft
Plates say Chun-Li, drop the Benz off

Oh, I get it, they paintin' me out to be the bad guy
Well when's the last time you see a bad guy do the rap game like me?

I went and copped the chopsticks
Put it in my bun just to pop sh-t
I'm always in the top sh-t
Box seats, b-tch, f-ck the gossip
How many a' them coulda did it with finnesse?
Now everybody like, "She really is the best."
You play checkers, couldn't beat me playin' chess
Now I'm about to turn around and beat my chest
B-tch, it's King Kong, yes, it's King Kong
B-tch, it's King Kong, this is King Kong
Chinese ink on, Siamese links on
Call me 2 Chainz, name go ding dong
B-tch, it's King Kong, yes, I'm King Kong
This is King Kong? Yes, Miss King Kong
In my kingdom with my Timbs on
How many championships? What? Six rings on

They need rappers like me, they need rappers like me
So they can get on their f-cking keyboards and make me the bad guy, Chun-Li

Ayo, I been on, b-tch, you been conned
Bentley tints on, Fendi prints on
I mean I been Storm, X-Men been formed
He keep on dialin' Nicki like the Prince song
I-I-I been on, b-tch, you been conned
Bentley tints on, Fendi prints on
Ayo, I been off, Lara been Croft
Plates say Chun-Li, drop the Benz off

I come alive, I, I'm always sky high
Designer thigh highs, it's my lifestyle
I come alive, I, I'm always sky high
Designer thigh highs, it's my lifestyle
I need a Mai Tai, so f-ckin' sci-fi
Gimme the password to the f-ckin' wifi
