HIM - Sam Smith

The Experience: I feel you staring when he is with me... Sam Smith pits his feelings against his parents'...

Music video: Still waiting.

The Meaning of HIM: The song jumps back and forth between two conversations; one with God - Holy Father we need to talk I have a secret - and one with parents who are not on board with their son's homosexuality - I'm not the boy that you thought you wanted. Both conversations are one-sided: we only hear Sam Smith's side of the conversation and don't know what the God's or his parents' response is, if any. Smith addresses the tension and stress of coming out, but doesn't delve deeply into the merits of either conversation. His only certainty is how he feels - it is him I love - and he's sure it can't be sin because it feels too good.

Ask yourself: Are our feelings the only standard we can judge our decisions by? What if different people feel differently about the same thing? Are others bound to respect all of our decisions? Can you respect someone but still reject their decisions?

LYRICS:

Holy Father
We need to talk
I have a secret
That I can't keep
I'm not the boy that
You thought you wanted
Please don't get angry
Have faith in me

Say I shouldn't be here but I can't give up his touch
It is him I love
It is him
Don't you try and tell me that God doesn't care for us
It is him I love
It is him I love

I walk the streets of Mississippi
I hold my lover by the hand
I feel you staring when he is with me
How can I make you understand?

Say I shouldn't be here but I can't give up his touch
It is him I love
It is him
Don't you try and tell me that God doesn't care for us
It is him I love
It is him I love

Oh, I love
No, No
I love
I love
Him I love
Him I love
Him I love
Him I love

Holy Father
Judge my sins
I'm not afraid of what they will bring
I'm not the boy that you thought you wanted
I love him
