Head Above Water - Avril Lavigne

The Experience: I need you now I need you most... When you face a fight you know you can't win alone...

Music video: The whole video takes place on the seashore with Avril Lavigne perched on the edge between life - solid land - and death - the water. She rocks a white dress that evokes two things. First, a burial shroud: death is that close and that real - I can't breathe. Second, a wedding gown: she needs God to claim her for his own if she's going to survive - I'll meet you there at the altar. The crisis goes from threatening to deadly as she goes from the clifftops to the depths. But the last shot is Avril, alive and dry, haunted but victorious.

The Meaning of Head Above Water: Fresh from her own struggle with Lyme disease, Avril Lavigne details a crucial moment of that fight. In her own words, "One night, I thought I was dying, and I had accepted that I was going to die. My mom laid with me in bed and held me. I felt like I was drowning. Under my breath, I prayed ‘God, please help to keep my head above the water.’ In that moment, the song writing of this album began. It was like I tapped into something. It was a very spiritual experience. Lyrics flooded through me from that point on." Read her whole story here. Head Above Water is about every all-important battle - my life is what I'm fighting for - that you can't win - I can't see in the stormy weather I can't seem to keep it all together and I can't swim the ocean like this forever and I can't breathe. Avril's response? She begs for a rescue. And the one she reaches out to is God himself - God, keep my head above water don't let me drown. Because when you're too weak to win, your cry for help is the strongest weapon you have - my voice becomes the driving force.

Ask yourself: Have you faced a fight you couldn't win? Have you experienced being rescued?

LYRICS:

I've gotta keep the calm before the storm
I don't want less, I don't want more
Must bar the windows and the doors
To keep me safe, to keep me warm

Yeah my life is what I'm fighting for
Can't part the sea, can't reach the shore
And my voice becomes the driving force
I won't let this pull me overboard

God, keep my head above water
Don't let me drown, it gets harder
I'll meet you there at the altar
As I fall down to my knees
Don't let me drown, drown, drown
Don't let me, don't let me, don't let me drown

So pull me up from down below
'Cause I'm underneath the undertow
Come dry me off and hold me close
I need you now I need you most

God, keep my head above water
Don't let me drown, it gets harder
I'll meet you there at the altar
As I fall down to my knees
Don't let me drown, drown, drown
(Don't let me, don't let me, don't let me drown)
Don't let me drown, drown, drown
And keep my head above water
(Don't let me, don't let me, don't let me drown)
Above water

And I can't see in the stormy weather
I can't seem to keep it all together
And I can't swim the ocean like this forever
And I can't breathe

God, keep my head above water
I lose my breath at the bottom
Come rescue me, I'll be waiting
I'm too young to fall asleep

God, keep my head above water
Don't let me drown, it gets harder
I'll meet you there at the altar
As I fall down to my knees

Don't let me drown
Don't let me drown
(Don't let me, don't let me, don't let me drown)
Don't let me drown
And keep my head above water
(Don't let me, don't let me, don't let me drown)
Above water
