Big God - Florence + The Machine

The Experience: You need a big god... Honestly accepting your need hurts. Hoping in god hurts. Especially when you haven't found him yet...

Music video: Everything is need. The visuals begin and end with Florence Welch alone in empty blackness. The background dancers embody a intense, feral, ultimately vulnerable state. The need is intense. It's suffered. It's also helpless. There's no path and no progress through the darkness. Florence can't find god. And he hasn't showed yet. But the light never goes out. There's still hope even if that hope hurts so very much.

The Meaning of Big God: Florence + The Machine take an anguished and deep look at faith - it hurts. It's hard to need God, especially when you're in tune enough with your needs to know you need a big god. He has to be big enough to hold your love. He has to be big enough to fill you up. So you take the leap and acknowledge that immense need. And the problems start. What if you look for him and he doesn't show? You keep me up at night to my messages, you do not reply. What if there are places in your life you yourself hope he doesn't ever see? Well, you can never know the places that I go. What if he's not there and your need goes forever unmet? You'll always be my favorite ghost. Big God doesn't ever reach the god it's looking so hard for. That pain permeates the song: sometimes I think it's gettin' better and then it gets much worse. Is it just part of the process? Well, Jesus Christ, it hurts. The song's final lyrics are a last cry for affection and divine intervention. But Big God dies out with Florence Welch's final agonized moan.

Ask yourself: How do you cope with the certainty that you need god... especially when you haven't found him yet? Do you deny your need? Or do you hope on?

LYRICS:

You need a big god
Big enough to hold your love
You need a big god
Big enough to fill you up

You keep me up at night
To my messages, you do not reply
You know I still like you the most
The best of the best and the worst of the worst
Well, you can never know
The places that I go
I still like you the most
You'll always be my favorite ghost

You need a big god
Big enough to hold your love
You need a big god
Big enough to fill you up

Sometimes I think it's gettin' better
And then it gets much worse
Is it just part of the process?
Well, Jesus Christ, it hurts
Though I know I should know better
Well, I can make this work
Is it just part of the process?
Well, Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ, it hurts
Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ, it hurts

You need a big god
Big enough to hold your love
You need a big god
Big enough to fill you up

Shower your affection, let it rain on me
And pull down the mountain, drag your cities to the sea
Shower your affection, let it rain on me
Don't leave me on this white cliff
Let it slide down to the, slide down to the sea
Slide down to the, slide down to the sea
