I Warned Myself - Charlie Puth

The Experience: I shoulda known....  Beaten down, betrayed, weak, and stupid... feeling like a failure.
The Vibe: A regret the oppressive heavy beat won't let you run away from.
The Topic: Temptation.
The Value: Fidelity.
The Tension: I warned myself that I shouldn't play with fire (I didn't - don't - want to take what I shouldn't) vs. But I can tell myself that I'll do it one more time (but I know just how weak I am).

Music video: Charlie Puth alternates between running from his failure - screaming through the desert in his Jaguar - and the moment when he gave in and embraced temptation. He's a victim - she has the lit match - but he should have been stronger. And that guilt is compounded by gauntlet of girls lining the path to his chair and surrounding him and her on the floor: he has a history of failing to live up to the demands of his conscience.

The Meaning of I Warned Myself: Knowing what's right isn't enough. Wanting to do the right thing isn't enough. You have to be strong and smart enough to actually resist temptation. I Warned Myself explores the complex regret that follows hard on the heels of an infidelity. The sense of stupidity: I warned myself. The anger at being victimized: you mess with my heart, now you're the reason why. The sense of betrayal: Do you remember when you told me I don't have to worry? ...I shoulda known that was a lie. And finally, the insecurity of knowing that from here on out I don't trust in myself to do the right thing. Especially with the same person he's fallen to so many times.

Ask yourself: Where do you find the strength to live true to your convictions? Can anyone be strong enough to live life facing and not just running away from temptation?

LYRICS:

I warned myself that I shouldn't play with fire
But I can tell that I'll do it one more time
Don't trust in myself, no good for my health
You mess with my heart, now you're the reason why

Do you remember when you told me
I don't have to worry?
He's overseas, out on his tour
He'll be okay without me
You said you had nothing to hide
That you left him long ago
I shoulda known that was a lie

I warned myself that I shouldn't play with fire
But I can tell that I'll do it one more time
Don't trust in myself, no good for my health
You mess with my heart, now you're the reason why

I warned myself that I shouldn't play with fire
But I can tell that I'll do it one more time
Don't trust in myself, no good for my health
You mess with my heart, now you're the reason why

Do you remember when you said
Do not tell anybody?
'Cause if you do I'll be the first
To put my hands around your thr- (choke)
If you had nothing to hide
Why is no one supposed to know
I shoulda known that was a lie

I warned myself that I shouldn't play with fire
But I can tell that I'll do it one more time
Don't trust in myself, no good for my health
You mess with my heart, now you're the reason why

I warned myself that I shouldn't play with fire
But I can tell that I'll do it one more time
Don't trust in myself, no good for my health
You mess with my heart, now you're the reason why
